📚 Year 8 CCEA Psychology Core Knowledge Review | CCEA

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. For Year 8 students following the CCEA curriculum, it means exploring how we think, feel, learn and interact with others. This article pulls together the essential knowledge you need, covering everything from brain functions and memory to social influence and research methods. Each section is broken into bite-sized English–Chinese pairs to help you master the key ideas in both languages.

1. What Is Psychology? |

Psychology is defined as the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. Behaviour includes any action we can observe, like talking or running, while mental processes refer to private thoughts, emotions and memories that cannot be seen directly.

Psychologists use the scientific method to form research questions, collect data and test hypotheses. This separates psychology from everyday guessing or folk wisdom.

The field has many branches. Biological psychology looks at the brain and nervous system; cognitive psychology studies thinking, memory and language; developmental psychology explores how people grow and change throughout life; and social psychology examines how we are influenced by others.

2. The Brain and Behaviour |

The brain is the main control centre of the human body. It contains billions of nerve cells called neurons that communicate using electrical and chemical signals.

The cerebral cortex is divided into four lobes, each with specialised functions. The frontal lobe deals with planning, decision-making and personality. The parietal lobe processes touch, temperature and body position. The occipital lobe is dedicated to vision, and the temporal lobe handles hearing, language and some aspects of memory.

Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that carry signals across the tiny gap between neurons (the synapse). For example, dopamine is linked to pleasure and motivation, while serotonin affects mood and sleep.

3. Memory: How We Remember |

Memory is the process of encoding, storing and later retrieving information. Encoding turns sensory input into a code the brain can use; storage holds the information over time; retrieval accesses it when needed.

According to the multi-store model, memory has three separate stores. Sensory memory holds very brief impressions (a few seconds). Short-term memory (STM) can hold around 5–9 items for about 20–30 seconds, especially if we rehearse the information. Long-term memory (LTM) has a huge capacity and can store information almost permanently.

Long-term memory is often divided into procedural memory (skills, like riding a bike), semantic memory (facts and knowledge) and episodic memory (personal experiences).

4. Forgetting and Memory Errors |

Forgetting does not always mean a memory has disappeared. Sometimes the information was never properly encoded in the first place. In other cases, it decays over time or is displaced from short-term memory by new information.

Interference theory suggests that memories can get confused. Proactive interference happens when old learning disrupts new memories; retroactive interference is when new learning disrupts recall of old memories.

Memory is not like a video recording. It can be reconstructed and altered. In eyewitness testimony research, Elizabeth Loftus showed that leading questions can change what people remember, demonstrating the fragile nature of memory.

5. Classical Conditioning: Learning by Association |

Classical conditioning was first described by Ivan Pavlov in his famous experiment with dogs. It is a type of learning in which a neutral stimulus becomes associated with a meaningful stimulus and eventually triggers a similar response.

In Pavlov’s study, food was the unconditioned stimulus (US) that naturally caused salivation (unconditioned response, UR). The sound of a bell was a neutral stimulus. After repeatedly pairing the bell with food, the bell alone became a conditioned stimulus (CS) that produced salivation – now called the conditioned response (CR).

Important concepts include generalisation (responding to similar stimuli), discrimination (not responding to dissimilar stimuli) and extinction (the conditioned response fading when the CS is no longer paired with the US).

6. Operant Conditioning: Learning from Consequences |

Operant conditioning, developed by B.F. Skinner, explains how we learn from the consequences of our actions. Behaviour is shaped and maintained by reinforcements and punishments.

Positive reinforcement means adding a pleasant stimulus to strengthen a behaviour, such as giving a reward for completing homework. Negative reinforcement means removing an unpleasant stimulus to strengthen behaviour, like taking a painkiller to relieve a headache – the behaviour of taking medicine is reinforced by the headache going away.

Punishment aims to weaken behaviour. Positive punishment adds something unpleasant (e.g., a scolding), while negative punishment removes something pleasant (e.g., losing phone privileges).

7. Observational Learning: Learning by Watching |

Albert Bandura’s social learning theory emphasises that we can learn new behaviours simply by observing others. This is called observational learning or modelling.

In the famous Bobo doll experiment, children watched an adult being aggressive towards an inflatable doll. Later, many of those children imitated the aggressive acts, especially if they saw the adult being rewarded. This showed that reinforcement is not always direct.

Bandura proposed four key steps for observational learning: attention (paying notice to the model), retention (remembering what was observed), reproduction (having the ability to copy the behaviour) and motivation (wanting to imitate, perhaps because of rewards).

8. Emotions and Motivation |

Emotions are complex feelings that involve physiological arousal, expressive behaviours and conscious experience. Basic emotions include happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and disgust.

The James-Lange theory suggests that we experience emotion because we notice bodily changes. For example, we feel afraid because our heart is racing. In contrast, the Cannon-Bard theory says that the bodily reaction and the emotional experience happen at the same time.

Motivation refers to the drives that direct our behaviour towards goals. Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs arranges human motives from basic biological needs (food, safety) up to self-actualisation – the desire to reach one’s full potential.

9. Personality: What Makes You Unique? |

Personality describes an individual’s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and behaving. Psychologists often use the Big Five model, which includes openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism (OCEAN for short).

Openness involves curiosity and a willingness to try new things. Conscientiousness refers to being organised and dependable. Extraversion is about sociability and energy. Agreeableness reflects kindness and cooperation. Neuroticism indicates emotional instability and a tendency to experience negative feelings.

Sigmund Freud described the mind as having three parts: the id (basic drives and impulses), the ego (the rational part that balances the id and reality) and the superego (the moral conscience). While modern psychology does not fully accept this model, it remains a useful historical idea.

10. Social Influence: Conformity and Obedience |

Social influence looks at how our thoughts, feelings and actions are affected by other people. Two key forms are conformity (going along with a group) and obedience (following direct orders from an authority figure).

Solomon Asch’s line-judging experiment revealed the power of conformity. Even when the correct answer was obvious, many participants gave an obviously wrong answer just because the rest of the group did so. This showed the pull of normative social influence – the desire to fit in.

Stanley Milgram’s obedience study, meanwhile, found that ordinary people could be instructed to deliver what they thought were painful electric shocks to a learner, simply because an authority figure told them to. The experiment highlighted how situational factors, such as proximity to the authority, can dramatically affect obedience levels.

11. Research Methods in Psychology (Basic) |

Psychologists use various methods to investigate behaviour. The experimental method is particularly important because it allows researchers to establish cause–effect relationships. In an experiment, the independent variable (IV) is what the researcher changes, and the dependent variable (DV) is what is measured.

A well-designed experiment controls extraneous variables so that any change in the DV can be confidently attributed to the IV. Participants are often randomly allocated to different conditions to reduce bias.

Other methods include naturalistic observation (watching behaviour without interference), surveys and questionnaires (collecting self-reported data) and correlational studies (looking for relationships between two variables, though correlation does not imply causation).

12. Ethics in Psychology |

When conducting research with human participants, psychologists must follow strict ethical guidelines to protect people’s wellbeing. Key principles include informed consent, the right to withdraw, confidentiality, protection from harm and debriefing after the study.

Informed consent means that participants should fully understand what the study involves and agree to take part voluntarily. If children or vulnerable people are involved, consent must be obtained from parents or guardians.

Deception should be avoided unless it is absolutely necessary for the research. If used, the researcher must tell participants the truth afterward during debriefing. The goal is to balance the pursuit of knowledge with the dignity and safety of every individual.
