1. Independent Variable and Dependent Variable |

The independent variable (IV) is the factor the researcher deliberately changes or manipulates. The dependent variable (DV) is what is measured; it depends on the IV. A common exam mistake is circling the DV when asked to identify the IV, especially when the question is phrased around the aim of an experiment. Always ask yourself: ‘What did I change?’ (IV) and ‘What did I record as a result?’ (DV).

For example, in a study testing whether the amount of revision time affects memory test scores, revision time is the IV, and the test score is the DV. Many learners reverse these, thinking the test score is the IV because the experiment is ‘about’ test performance. That reversal is a classic pitfall.

2. Experimental Designs and Confounding Variables |

Three main designs appear: independent groups, repeated measures, and matched pairs. An independent groups design uses different participants in each condition; the key weakness is participant variables – differences between the people in each group might affect the DV, not the IV. Repeated measures uses the same participants in all conditions; here the major problem is order effects (practice or boredom). Matched pairs is like independent groups but participants are paired on a key trait first, reducing (but not eliminating) participant variables.

Students frequently misidentify the design in a scenario. If the text says ‘one group did task A, another group did task B’, it is independent groups, even if the groups are similar in age. Always underline the phrase describing how participants were allocated. Also remember that a confounding variable is an extra factor that systematically changes with the IV, making it impossible to know what caused the result. Do not confuse it with any extraneous variable; a confound must vary alongside the IV.

3. Ethical Issues in Psychological Research |

The British Psychological Society (BPS) guidelines require informed consent, the right to withdraw, confidentiality, protection from harm, and a debrief at the end. A very common error is thinking that consent from a parent or guardian alone is enough for children under 16; researchers must also obtain the child’s own assent. Another frequent mistake is believing that debriefing fully undoes any harm – debriefing explains the study but cannot always remove psychological distress.

Deception is sometimes allowed, but only if the study has strong scientific value and no alternative method exists. Yet many students claim any deception is unethical. The key is that participants must not be distressed by the deception, and they must be fully debriefed afterwards. Learn to apply the ‘cost–benefit balance’ when evaluating ethical decisions.

4. Multi-Store Model of Memory: Frequent Confusions |

Atkinson and Shiffrin’s multi-store model distinguishes sensory memory, short-term memory (STM), and long-term memory (LTM). A typical mistake is saying information enters STM directly from the senses without rehearsal; actually, sensory memory holds a fleeting copy of the sensory input, and only the information we pay attention to passes into STM. If attention is not given, the trace decays rapidly – usually within half a second for visual information.

STM has a limited capacity of about 7±2 items and a duration of around 18–30 seconds without rehearsal. LTM has potentially unlimited capacity and duration. Questions often ask you to apply these features. For example, if you remember a phone number for just a few seconds, that is STM; if you recall your first day at school, that is LTM. Be careful: simply repeating information (maintenance rehearsal) can keep it in STM, but elaborative rehearsal – linking it to existing knowledge – transfers it to LTM.

5. Encoding, Retrieval, and Forgetting Errors |

Encoding is converting sensory input into a form that the memory system can handle. Students often mix up acoustic encoding (sound), visual encoding, and semantic encoding (meaning). STM mainly uses acoustic encoding; LTM relies more on semantic encoding. This explains why you might confuse similar-sounding words in a STM task but confuse words with similar meanings when recalling from LTM.

Forgetting can occur because of decay, interference, or retrieval failure. A common error is stating that all forgetting is due to decay. In proactive interference, old information disrupts new learning; in retroactive interference, new information disrupts old memories. Match ‘pro’ = forward and ‘retro’ = backward to avoid mixing them up. Context-dependent forgetting (external environment) and state-dependent forgetting (internal mood or bodily state) are retrieval failures, not loss of the memory trace.

Ainsworth identified secure (Type B), insecure-avoidant (Type A), and insecure-resistant/ambivalent (Type C) attachment. The Strange Situation procedure uses eight short episodes involving the infant, caregiver, and a stranger. The critical measures are separation anxiety, stranger anxiety, and reunion behaviour. Many pupils wrongly assume that a baby crying very loudly upon separation indicates resistant attachment; what actually defines Type C is the mixture of clinging and resisting contact upon reunion – the baby both seeks and rejects the caregiver.

Securely attached infants explore freely when the caregiver is present, show distress on separation, and are easily comforted on reunion. Avoidant infants explore regardless of the caregiver’s presence and show little reaction when the caregiver leaves or returns. A frequent exam mistake is describing a child who ignores the caregiver on return as ‘secure because they are independent’. In fact, independence without warmth is a hallmark of avoidant attachment.

7. Asch’s Conformity Study: Common Misunderstandings | Asch

Solomon Asch’s line judgment task showed that about 75% of participants conformed at least once, and the overall conformity rate on critical trials was around 37%. A very frequent error is claiming the majority conformed on every trial, or that everyone conformed at least once. The study is about minority yielding to an unambiguous majority, not about people being weak-minded – the presence of even one dissenter (a ‘partner’) drastically reduced conformity.

Solomon Asch

Asch identified three main reasons for conformity: normative social influence (wanting to be liked), informational social influence (believing the group knows better), and identification (temporary conformity to fit a group role). Pupils often only mention the first one. In evaluation, the artificial stimuli (lines) and the all-male sample are standard criticisms, but the study has high internal validity because it controlled the real IV very precisely.

8. Obedience: Milgram’s Findings and Ethical Confusions | 服从:Milgram 实验的结果与伦理混淆

Stanley Milgram found that 65% of participants administered the maximum 450-volt shock, and 100% went up to 300 volts. Students regularly misquote the 65% as ‘obedience rate’ for all conditions or forget that the teacher was the real participant and the learner was a confederate. Also, many think the shocks were real – they were not; the learner was acting. However, the participants believed the shocks were genuine at the time, which is why the study is so powerful.

Stanley Milgram

Ethical criticisms include deception, lack of the right to withdraw (the experimenter’s prods), and psychological distress. A common weak answer says ‘Milgram was unethical; therefore, his findings are useless.’ Instead, you should recognise that the research contributed hugely to our understanding of destructive obedience, though it could not be replicated in the same form today. Modern equivalents use virtual reality or reduced harm.

9. Brain Structures: Lobe Functions and Common Mix-Ups |

The cerebral cortex is divided into four lobes: frontal (thought, planning, personality, voluntary movement), temporal (hearing, memory, language comprehension), parietal (touch, spatial awareness, body position), and occipital (vision). A classic exam slip is saying ‘the occipital lobe is at the front’ because learners confuse ‘occipital’ with ‘optical’ but misplace it. Remember: occipital = back, near the neck. Use ‘O’ for occipital and ‘O’ for optical at the back.

Broca’s area (left frontal lobe) is responsible for speech production; Wernicke’s area (left temporal lobe) is for language comprehension. Damage to Broca’s area leads to non-fluent aphasia – the person knows what they want to say but cannot produce fluid speech. Damage to Wernicke’s area results in fluent but meaningless speech. Questions frequently swap the symptoms, so learn them as a pair with opposite effects.

10. Neurons and Synaptic Transmission: Frequent Slips |

A sensory neuron carries signals from receptors to the central nervous system (CNS); a relay neuron connects sensory and motor neurons within the CNS; a motor neuron sends signals from the CNS to effectors (muscles or glands). Many students label a diagram incorrectly by drawing a sensory neuron going to a muscle, which is the job of a motor neuron. Use the phrase ‘Sensory = Send to CNS’ and ‘Motor = Move muscles’ as mnemonics.

用 “Sensory = Send to CNS” 和 “Motor = Move muscles” 作为助记法。

At the synapse, the electrical impulse triggers the release of neurotransmitters from the presynaptic neuron. These chemicals cross the synaptic gap and bind to receptor sites on the postsynaptic neuron. A common error is stating that the electrical signal jumps directly across the gap; transmission is chemical in nature. Also, remember: reuptake is the process where unused neurotransmitters are taken back up by the presynaptic neuron, which stops stimulation.

11. Observational Studies and Questionnaire Pitfalls |

Naturalistic observation records behaviour in a real setting without interference; controlled observation occurs in a structured environment. Participant observation means the researcher joins the group being studied. Covert observation (hidden) raises ethical concerns but reduces demand characteristics. Overt observation (open) is ethical but may cause social desirability bias. Students often describe a study as ‘covert’ when the researcher is simply sitting to one side; if participants know they are being watched, it is overt, regardless of how the researcher behaves.

Questionnaires often suffer from poor wording: leading questions (‘Don’t you agree that…’), double-barrelled questions (‘Do you enjoy PE and music?’), and ambiguous terms. A major error in evaluating surveys is failing to distinguish between closed questions (fixed responses, easy to quantify but lack depth) and open questions (free-text, rich but hard to analyse). In exam answers, specify which type was used and link it to the goal of the research.

12. Means, Medians, Modes, and Graphing Blunders |

When calculating the mean, add all values and divide by the number of values. A slip that catches many out is including number labels in the sum or dividing by the wrong count. The median is the middle value in an ordered list. For an odd number of items, it is the central number; for an even number, you must find the mean of the two middle values – many forget this step. The mode is simply the most frequent value.

Bar charts must have spaces between the bars and should be used for separate categories (discrete data). Histograms have bars touching and are for continuous data grouped into intervals. Year 8 papers frequently ask you to spot the mistake in a graph; mixing these two is high on the list. Also, always label axes with ‘axis title (units)’ and use a clear, even scale. Sliced or broken axes without clear warning mislead the reader.
