📚 Common Misconceptions in Year 10 WJEC Business and How to Fix Them | Year 10 WJEC

Many Year 10 students studying WJEC Business develop misunderstandings that can hold back their exam performance. These errors often arise from confusing similar concepts, misapplying formulas, or oversimplifying real-world business scenarios. This article highlights the most common misconceptions and provides clear corrections to deepen your understanding and boost your confidence.

1. Confusing Unlimited and Limited Liability |

A very common mistake is assuming that all businesses protect their owners’ personal assets. Many students think sole traders and partners enjoy limited liability, but in reality, unincorporated businesses carry unlimited liability. This means the owner is personally responsible for all business debts, risking their home or savings.

To correct this, remember that only incorporated businesses such as private limited companies (Ltd) and public limited companies (plc) offer limited liability. The company is a separate legal entity from its owners. In the exam, always link the type of ownership to the risk level and consider why an entrepreneur might choose to incorporate.

2. Treating Profit and Cash as the Same Thing |

Students often use the terms ‘profit’ and ‘cash’ interchangeably, but they are not the same. A business can be profitable on paper but run out of cash because customers buy on credit or stock is tied up. Equally, a business can have plenty of cash from a loan yet be making a loss.

Profit is the surplus after all expenses are deducted from revenue, recorded when a sale is made. Cash flow is about the timing of money moving in and out of the business. In exam questions, always check whether you are solving a cash flow forecast problem or a profit calculation. Highlighting the difference between revenue and cash inflow shows a deeper understanding.

3. Break‑even Calculation Errors |

Many candidates lose marks by misapplying the break‑even formula. A typical error is forgetting to subtract variable cost per unit from the selling price, or mixing up total costs and fixed costs. Some students also fail to interpret the result, treating break‑even as a target for maximum profit.

The correct formula is:

Break‑even point (units) = Fixed costs ÷ (Selling price per unit – Variable cost per unit)

Remember that break‑even is simply the output level where total revenue equals total costs; no profit or loss is made. Practise drawing and labelling the break‑even chart carefully, and explain what the margin of safety means. This will prevent common diagram errors.

4. Mixing Up Mark‑up and Profit Margin |

This is a subtle but exam‑relevant mistake. Students sometimes think that a 50% mark‑up means the business keeps 50p of every £1 of sales as profit. In reality, mark‑up is calculated on the cost price, while profit margin is calculated on the selling price. The figures are not the same.

For example, a product bought for £10 and sold for £15 has a mark‑up of 50% on cost. Its profit margin, however, is only 33.3% on selling price. When analysing profitability, always identify which base the percentage relates to. If a question asks for ‘gross profit margin’, use (gross profit ÷ revenue) × 100.

5. Misunderstanding Primary and Secondary Research |

Students frequently label a survey as secondary research and a website as primary research because they associate ‘primary’ with ‘first’. In business studies, primary research (or field research) is data collected first‑hand for a specific purpose, such as questionnaires, interviews or focus groups. Everything else is secondary research.

To fix this, practise classifying examples: a business using government statistics or market reports is doing secondary research, even if the material is digital. Exam questions often ask you to justify the choice – so focus on whether the data is newly gathered or already exists. Then link the research method to cost, accuracy and relevance.

6. Confusing the 4Ps with the 4Cs | 混淆 4Ps 与 4Cs 营销组合

The marketing mix is often exclusively memorised as Product, Price, Place and Promotion. Some students then become confused when examiners refer to the 4Cs: Customer solution, Cost to customer, Convenience, and Communication. They may try to squeeze the 4Cs into the same definition as the 4Ps.

当考官提到 4Cs(顾客解决方案、顾客成本、便利性和沟通)时,有些学生就会感到困惑。

The 4Ps view the mix from the business’s perspective, while the 4Cs view the same elements from the customer’s perspective. Both are relevant in WJEC exams. A correct response explains how a ‘Product’ becomes a ‘Customer solution’, or how ‘Promotion’ shifts to two‑way ‘Communication’. Draw a quick table to compare them.

4Ps (business view) 4Cs (customer view)
Product Customer solution
Price Cost to the customer
Place Convenience
Promotion Communication

7. Calling Current Assets ‘Fixed Assets’ |

A glaring mistake on balance sheets and exams is classifying stock (inventory) or cash as fixed assets. Fixed assets are long‑term resources used in production over several years, such as machinery, vehicles and buildings. Current assets are short‑term items expected to be turned into cash within a year.

Correction starts with the definitions. Remember: fixed assets are things the business keeps and uses; current assets flow in and out constantly – cash, trade receivables (debtors) and inventory. Practise sorting items from a short case study into the right categories, and explain why a high proportion of fixed assets might be essential for a manufacturer but less so for a retailer.

8. Assuming All Stakeholders Want the Same Thing |

Students often treat stakeholders as a group with a shared goal, but in reality their objectives frequently conflict. For example, workers want higher wages, which could reduce the profits owners seek. Local residents may oppose the expansion that customers demand because of increased traffic or pollution.

To handle this properly in an exam, list the main stakeholder groups – shareholders/owners, employees, managers, customers, suppliers, local community, government – and identify what each one most values. Then craft an answer that recognises the conflict, presents a balanced argument and suggests how stakeholder mapping or compromise can preserve a good reputation and long‑term success.

9. Mixing Internal and External Economies of Scale |

When a firm grows, it can lower average costs through economies of scale. A repeated error is attributing a better‑trained local workforce (an external economy) to the firm’s own action (an internal economy). Another is believing that internal economies of scale keep reducing costs indefinitely, ignoring diseconomies of scale.

Internal economies arise from the firm’s own expansion: technical, managerial, purchasing, financial, and risk‑bearing. External economies come from the growth of the whole industry or area, such as skilled labour availability, better transport links, or supplier networks. Always specify the source in your answer and explain that beyond a certain point, diseconomies like communication breakdowns can cause average costs to rise again.

10. Linking Ownership Type Incorrectly to Access to Finance |

Students often claim that a sole trader ‘cannot borrow money’ or that a public limited company is the only form that can use retained profits. Both claims are wrong. Even sole traders can access loans and overdrafts, although their unlimited liability may raise interest rates. All businesses can reinvest retained profit, provided they are profitable.

The key is the scale and variety of finance. Sole traders rely heavily on personal savings, loans and trade credit. Partnerships can pool more savings but still face unlimited liability. Private limited companies can sell shares to family and friends but not publicly. Public limited companies can issue shares on the stock exchange, raising larger sums. Always match the source of finance to the ownership type and the situation, discussing advantages and drawbacks.
