📚 Case Study Practice for Cambridge Year 11 Philosophy | 剑桥Year 11哲学案例分析实战演练

Case studies are at the heart of Cambridge Year 11 Philosophy examinations. They require you not simply to recount theories or define terms, but to apply philosophical concepts to unfamiliar scenarios, evaluate competing arguments, and construct well-reasoned responses under timed conditions. This article is a practical workout for your analytical skills. Through a series of guided exercises built around classic and contemporary dilemmas, we will practise identifying moral and epistemological issues, employing ethical frameworks like utilitarianism and Kantian deontology, spotting logical fallacies, and structuring high-scoring answers. Each section offers a paired English-Chinese explanation so you can develop the vocabulary and reasoning patterns essential for success in the IGCSE Philosophy paper.

1. Understanding Case Study Requirements in Cambridge Philosophy |

The Cambridge IGCSE Philosophy syllabus (0471) tests your ability to apply philosophical knowledge. In Paper 2, you will be given a short text describing a practical situation, often involving a moral dilemma, a clash of values, or a puzzle about knowledge. You must then answer questions that require you to identify the issue, explain it using philosophical language, consider different perspectives, and reach a justified conclusion. Mark schemes reward precise reference to the case, use of technical terms (such as ‘maxim’, ‘hedonic calculus’, ‘synthetic a priori’), and balanced evaluation. Always read the stem question carefully: words like ‘to what extent’, ‘assess’, or ‘discuss’ signal that you must weigh up strengths and weaknesses rather than just describe.

When approaching a case study, first sketch a quick plan. Identify the central philosophical problem: is it about ethics (right/wrong), epistemology (knowledge/belief), or metaphysics (reality/identity)? Then note which thinkers or theories from your syllabus are relevant. For an ethical case, you might contrast Bentham’s utility principle with Kant’s categorical imperative. For an epistemological puzzle, you could bring in Descartes’ evil demon or Hume’s problem of induction. Always explain why a particular theory supports or challenges the actions or beliefs described in the case.

2. Identifying the Philosophical Issue and Stakeholders |

Every case study conceals a central question. Start by asking: ‘What makes this situation philosophically interesting?’ For instance, a story about a doctor who lies to a patient might raise the issue of whether lying is ever permissible if it produces good outcomes (consequentialism) versus a duty of truth-telling (deontology). A second question is: ‘Who is affected, and what values are at stake?’ Distinguish between agents (those who act), patients (those affected by the action), and impartial observers. This stakeholder mapping helps you see the conflict from multiple angles, which earns marks for balance and depth.

In the exam, you can show this awareness by phrases such as ‘From the perspective of the patient, autonomy is fundamental, but the doctor might prioritise beneficence.’ Using philosophical terms like ‘autonomy’, ‘beneficence’, ‘non-maleficence’, and ‘justice’ (often drawn from medical ethics) demonstrates subject literacy. Similarly, in an epistemological case involving a news report, you can identify stakeholders like ‘the knower’, ‘the source’, and ‘the audience’, and discuss how cognitive biases or the tripartite definition of knowledge (justified true belief) apply.

3. Applying Utilitarian Reasoning |

Utilitarianism is a go-to theory for many case studies because it offers a clear decision procedure: choose the action that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. To apply it precisely, use Bentham’s hedonic calculus dimensions: intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent. For example, if a case involves a government deciding whether to introduce a surveillance system, calculate the pleasure of increased security against the pain of lost privacy, considering how many individuals are affected (extent) and for how long (duration). You can even construct a simple table in your answer to show structured reasoning.

Hedonic Factor Pleasure of Security Pain of Privacy Loss
Intensity High Moderate
Duration Continuous Continuous
Extent All citizens All citizens

However, the exam expects evaluation. Point out that measuring these qualitatively different experiences on a single scale is problematic: can we really compare the pleasure of feeling safe with the dignity of being unobserved? John Stuart Mill’s version of utilitarianism distinguishes higher (intellectual) and lower (bodily) pleasures, arguing that higher pleasures should be weighted more. This refinement can strengthen your analysis; you might say that the loss of intellectual autonomy is a higher pain that outweighs the lower pleasures of convenience. Always connect your use of utilitarianism back to the details of the case.

4. Deontological (Kantian) Analysis |

Kant’s ethics provides a sharp contrast to utilitarianism because it focuses on duty and the intrinsic rightness of actions, not consequences. The key tool is the categorical imperative, especially its first formulation: ‘Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’ To analyse a case, formulate the agent’s maxim. For example, in a case of a student plagiarising to get a good grade, the maxim might be: ‘When I can gain an advantage by deceiving, I will do so.’ Test this by universalisation: what if everyone followed this maxim? A world of universal deception would undermine the very institution of academic trust, making it impossible to achieve the original aim (since credentials would be worthless). The maxim therefore leads to a contradiction in conception, making it a perfect duty not to plagiarise.

You should also consider the second formulation: ‘Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always at the same time as an end, never merely as a means.’ In the plagiarism case, the student is treating the teacher merely as a means to a grade, not as a rational being capable of genuine assessment. This reinforces the wrongness of the act. In your answer, explain both formulations where relevant, but do not just quote them; show how they apply to the specific circumstances.

Critics argue that Kant’s theory is too rigid. Would it be acceptable to lie to a would-be murderer to protect an innocent victim? Kant’s own example suggests not, because the lie violates a perfect duty to tell the truth, regardless of consequences. This creates a strong tension with our moral intuitions. In a case study, you can raise this as a limitation: while the categorical imperative provides a clear, principled boundary, it may fail to resolve hard cases where duties conflict. The exam rewards your ability to acknowledge and discuss such tensions.

5. Virtue Ethics and Character-Centred Approaches |

Instead of asking ‘What is the right action?’ virtue ethics asks ‘What would a virtuous person do?’ This approach, rooted in Aristotle, emphasises the development of good character traits (virtues) such as courage, honesty, compassion, and practical wisdom (phronesis). In a case study about a business executive who decides whether to lay off workers or cut their own salary, a virtue ethicist would examine what a temperate and just leader would do, not merely calculate outcomes or check universal rules. The doctrine of the mean is central: a virtue is the intermediate between excess and deficiency. Generosity, for instance, is the mean between profligacy and stinginess.

When using virtue ethics, identify which virtues are relevant to the case. In a dilemma about whistleblowing, virtues like integrity, loyalty, and courage all pull in different directions. A virtuous agent must exercise phronesis to weigh these competing considerations in the specific context. This flexibility is a strength of the theory, but also a criticism: it seems to offer no clear action-guidance. In your exam answer, you can note that while virtue ethics provides a rich description of moral character, it may be less useful for policy decisions where a rule or utility calculation is needed.

6. Case Study 1: The Trolley Problem and Its Variations |

The Classic Scenario: A runaway trolley is heading down a track where it will kill five workers. You are standing by a lever that can divert the trolley onto a side track, where one worker is trapped. Is it morally permissible to pull the lever? A utilitarian, focused on maximising welfare, would say yes: saving five lives at the cost of one produces the greatest good. A Kantian might hesitate: pulling the lever involves using the death of the one as a means to save the five, violating the principle of treating persons as ends. However, some Kantians distinguish between intending harm and merely foreseeing it, arguing that the death of the one is not directly intended (a principle of double effect).

Variation: The Fat Man – Now imagine you are on a bridge over the track. The only way to stop the trolley and save the five is to push a large man standing beside you onto the track. Most people who approved of pulling the lever now refuse to push the man. This psychological distance reveals powerful intuitions about ‘doing’ versus ‘allowing’ harm. In your case analysis, explore why pushing feels worse: the physical contact, the direct use of a person’s body, and the violation of a strong moral norm against killing. This contrast invites you to question whether our intuitions are a reliable guide to moral truth or just emotional noise.

7. Case Study 2: Lying to a Patient in a Medical Context |

A doctor diagnoses a terminally ill patient but, believing the truth will cause unbearable distress, tells the family the patient is stable and merely needs rest. Apply the four principles of biomedical ethics (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice). The patient’s autonomy is violated because they are denied the information needed to make decisions about their own life. The doctor’s beneficence (doing good) is aimed at preventing psychological harm, but non-maleficence (do no harm) is arguably breached because deception can cause a different kind of harm: loss of trust, and the inability to prepare for death. A Kantian would say the lie is categorically wrong: the doctor uses the patient merely as a fragile object to be protected, not as a rational agent. A rule-utilitarian might consider that a general practice of honesty leads to better outcomes, even if in this case a lie appears beneficial.

A virtue ethicist asks: what would a compassionate and truthful physician do? Some virtues are in tension: compassion might favour a comforting lie, while honesty requires disclosure. Practical wisdom is needed to find the right balance, perhaps by telling the truth gently, offering support, and respecting the patient’s resilience. In your essay, acknowledge that real-life cases are messy. Use phrases like ‘one could argue’ or ‘a critic might respond’ to show evaluative breadth.

8. Case Study 3: Animal Rights and Moral Status |

Consider a case where a cosmetics company tests a new product on rabbits, causing them pain but no lasting physical damage, to ensure the product is safe for human use. Utilitarians like Peter Singer argue that suffering is what matters morally, and because animals can suffer, their interests must be counted equally in the hedonic calculus. The trivial pleasure of a new lipstick cannot outweigh the acute pain of the test subjects. Singer’s principle of equal consideration of interests leads to a demand to abandon such testing. However, a critic might argue that human interests are weightier because we possess a higher capacity for rationality, reciprocal relationships, or self-awareness. This raises the philosophical issue of ‘speciesism’ – an unjustified bias in favour of our own species.

Kant’s direct argument is different: we have indirect duties regarding animals because cruelty to them can coarsen our character and make us more likely to mistreat humans. Animals are not rational beings, so they are not ends in themselves. This stance is often seen as too narrow. You can contrast it with a rights-based view (Tom Regan) that some animals are ‘subjects-of-a-life’ with inherent value, making animal testing a violation of their moral rights. When writing about this case, map out these positions clearly, and then offer your own reasoned conclusion, such as that the seriousness of animal suffering requires a precautionary approach, even if the metaphysical status of rights remains debatable.

9. Spotting Logical Fallacies and Weak Reasoning |

Many case studies are designed to test your ability to detect bad arguments. Common fallacies include: ad hominem (attacking the person instead of the argument), straw man (misrepresenting an opponent’s view to knock it down), false dilemma (presenting only two options when others exist), and slippery slope (claiming a small step will inevitably lead to a disaster without evidence). For example, in a debate about voluntary euthanasia, a speaker might say: ‘If we allow this, eventually doctors will be killing patients without consent.’ Spotting this as a slippery slope fallacy earns marks for critical analysis.

Another important concept is circular reasoning, where the conclusion is assumed in the premises. For instance, ‘Lying is wrong because it is not right to deceive people.’ Here, ‘wrong’ and ‘not right’ mean the same thing; the argument goes in a circle without justification. In an epistemological case, a student might claim ‘We know the textbook is reliable because it says so itself.’ Point out that this is a form of begging the question, relying on the very source under doubt. Use correct terminology when flagging these errors.

10. Structuring a High-Scoring Answer |

A well-structured answer follows a logical path: Issue → Theory → Application → Evaluation → Conclusion. Begin by stating the philosophical problem in your own words and signposting which theories you will use. Then explain the theory concisely, showing understanding of its key concepts. Apply the theory directly to the case, using quotations or paraphrases from the extract to illustrate how the theory supports or challenges a particular action. Next, evaluate: what are the strengths and limitations of this application? Bring in a counter-theory or a critique. Finally, offer a tentative conclusion that directly addresses the question, perhaps with a conditional judgment: ‘In this case, the Kantian emphasis on dignity provides a more principled stance, though a utilitarian might rightly point out the harm of ignoring consequences.’

Time management is crucial. You should not spend too long on a single theory. Aim for depth over breadth: two well-developed theories evaluated thoroughly will score higher than a superficial list of four. Practice writing answer plans under timed conditions: 2 minutes to read and annotate the extract, 2 minutes to plan, and the rest for writing. This routine builds the fluency needed on exam day.

11. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见陷阱及如何避免

Pitfall 1: Description without philosophy. Retelling the case study story or giving a purely historical account of a philosopher’s life does not answer the question. Every sentence should serve to build an argument. Avoid: ‘John Stuart Mill was a British philosopher who wrote Utilitarianism.’ Instead: ‘Mill’s higher/lower pleasure distinction allows us to evaluate the intellectual satisfaction of studying philosophy against the mere pleasure of leisure, which is crucial to this case.’

Pitfall 2: Lop-sided evaluation. Presenting an argument and then adding a one-sentence ‘on the other hand’ is not enough. Develop the counter-argument with the same care. Explain why someone might reasonably disagree, and then explain why your favoured view is still more convincing. Use phrases like ‘this is a powerful objection, but it fails to consider …’ or ‘while this is true, it does not fully undermine …’.

Pitfall 3: Ignoring the word ‘case’. Do not write a generic essay on the topic. Refer back to the extract constantly. Use short quotes or clear references, such as ‘the character’s decision to reveal the secret’ or ‘the company’s stated intention to maximise shareholder profit’. This demonstrates that your argument is grounded in the given material.

12. Final Practice Exercise and Self-Assessment Checklist |

Try this: a headteacher bans all social media access in school, arguing it distracts from learning. Some students protest that it is a violation of their freedom of expression. Write a plan for a 12-mark answer, identifying stakeholder perspectives and applying both utilitarian and rights-based theories. Afterwards, check your plan against the following criteria: (1) Philosophical issue stated clearly? (2) At least two stakeholders identified? (3) Utilitarian calculation with specific harms and benefits? (4) Reference to rights or Kantian respect for autonomy? (5) An identifiable strength and weakness of each view? (6) A justified conclusion that goes beyond mere opinion? Repeat this process with different cases from past papers to build confidence.

Rehearsing case studies regularly transforms theory from something you simply recall into something you can wield. Remember that Cambridge examiners are not looking for a ‘correct’ moral answer; they are looking for a well-argued philosophical response. By systematically applying frameworks, critiquing them, and reaching a nuanced verdict, you will demonstrate exactly the skills that earn top marks. Keep practicing, and you will approach your examination with the confidence of a trained philosopher, ready to untangle any dilemma thrown at you.
