📚 Year 11 AQA Politics: Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | Year 11 AQA

This handbook distils the key concepts of AQA GCSE Politics and Citizenship Studies into a set of memorable ‘formulas’ and ‘theorems’. While politics is not a natural science, many of its patterns can be expressed through relationships between variables – just like equations in maths or physics. Use these mental models to cut through complexity in topics ranging from electoral systems to the workings of government and the nature of rights. Each entry pairs a structured expression with a clear explanation, ensuring you can apply the logic in exam questions and active citizenship investigations.

1. The Power Formula |

Power = Influence × Legitimacy

In any political system, the capacity to get things done (power) is the product of two factors: the ability to shape outcomes (influence) and the recognition that such influence is rightfully held (legitimacy). When either factor approaches zero, effective power collapses – even if a ruler has brute force, they cannot govern sustainably without consent. This is why dictators go to great lengths to stage elections or claim divine right.

2. The Democracy Index |

Democracy ≈ (Free Elections + Rule of Law + Civil Rights) ÷ (Executive Constraints × Pluralism)

A robust democracy requires multiple dimensions working together. The numerator captures the three essentials: genuinely free and fair elections, the rule of law that applies equally to all, and protected civil rights such as freedom of speech and assembly. The denominator reflects the institutional checks: an executive that is constrained by parliament or courts, and a pluralist media landscape. High scores across all five elements keep the index high; weakness in one drags the whole score down.

3. The Electoral Victory Equation |

Seats Won = f(Votes, Electoral System, Swing, Turnout)

In a general election, the translation of votes into seats is never direct. The function depends crucially on the electoral system in use – First Past the Post (FPTP) amplifies leads for the largest party, while Proportional Representation (PR) gives a closer match. Swing measures the net change in voter support from one party to another since the last election. Turnout determines which demographics actually cast ballots, often tilting results towards older and wealthier voters.

赢得席位 = f(票数, 选举制度, 摇摆, 投票率)

4. The Cube Law (FPTP) |

Seat Share A / Seat Share B ≈ (Vote Share A / Vote Share B)³

The Cube Law is an empirical observation of how FPTP exaggerates the lead of the largest party. If Party A wins 40% of the vote and Party B wins 30%, the ratio of their vote shares is 1.33, but the ratio of seats is roughly (1.33)³ ≈ 2.35. This means Party A might end up with more than twice as many seats, turning a modest vote lead into a landslide in the Commons. The law is not perfect but holds remarkably well in two-party dominant systems like the UK until recently.

5. Duverger’s Law & Hypothesis |

Plurality Rule + Single-Member Districts → Two-Party System
Proportional Representation → Multiparty System

Maurice Duverger argued that the electoral system shapes the party system. Under FPTP, small parties find it nearly impossible to win seats unless their vote is geographically concentrated; voters desert them tactically to avoid ‘wasting’ their vote. This squeezes the system towards two large parties. In contrast, PR lowers the threshold for representation, allowing smaller parties to gain seats in proportion to their national vote share, which encourages multiple parties to form and persist.

6. The Voter Turnout Model |

Turnout = α × (Efficacy) + β × (Civic Duty) − γ × (Costs)

This simplified model captures the rational-choice dimension of voting. Efficacy is the belief that one vote can make a difference – it drops in safe seats. Civic duty is the social norm that voting is a moral obligation. Costs include registration hassle, lack of transport, bad weather, or low political knowledge. Policymakers can target any variable: make registration easier (lower costs), promote civic education, or make elections more competitive to boost efficacy.

7. Pressure Group Influence Formula |

Influence ≈ (Membership × Resources × Insider Access) ÷ Government Reliance on Sector

A pressure group’s ability to affect policy depends on its mobilisation capacity (membership), financial and expert resources, and whether it has insider status with departments. However, if the government is heavily dependent on that sector – e.g., the NHS or energy firms – the group’s influence paradoxically decreases, because ministers will already prioritise the sector and may resist being seen as captured. Outsider groups can compensate with media campaigns and public protests.

8. The UK Constitution Theorem |

UK Constitution = Statute Law + Common Law + Conventions + Works of Authority, all unentrenched

Unlike the US, the UK constitution is uncodified and drawn from several sources. Statute law is Acts of Parliament that deal with constitutional matters (e.g., Human Rights Act 1998). Common law is judge-made law through precedent. Conventions are unwritten rules followed because they are ‘the done thing’ (e.g., the monarch gives Royal Assent). Works of authority are respected academic texts like Erskine May. Because no source is entrenched, a simple majority in Parliament can change any part, which is why some call for a written constitution.

9. The Rights Equation |

Rights Enjoyed = Legal Entitlements + Citizen Action − State Limitations

Rights are not static gifts from the state; they need constant assertion. The 1998 Human Rights Act incorporated the ECHR into UK law, giving citizens a legal toolkit. But rights can be limited by national security concerns, public order, or parliamentary sovereignty. Active citizen participation – through judicial review, campaigning, and voting – turns paper rights into lived freedoms. Without citizen action, even well-drafted laws can become hollow.

10. The Representation Theorem |

Quality of Representation ≈ (Delegation × Accountability) ÷ Electoral System Disproportionality

Representative democracy works when elected members accurately channel constituency interests (delegation) and can be judged by voters at the next election (accountability). The electoral system’s disproportionality – measured by indexes like the Gallagher Index – acts as a divisor: the more distorted the seats–votes relationship, the lower the quality of representation. FPTP often produces high disproportionality, while PR systems offer a higher quality of representation in this sense, though they may weaken the constituency link.

11. The Political Spectrum Theorem |

Left: Economic equality, state intervention, collective welfare Right: Economic freedom, low taxes, individual responsibility

The left–right spectrum is a simplified but powerful mental model. It mostly tracks economic policy preferences. Left-wing positions advocate redistribution, public ownership, and strong trade unions. Right-wing positions favour free markets, privatisation, and minimal state intervention. In reality, many people hold mixed views, and there are separate dimensions for social liberal–conservative and authoritarian–libertarian values. However, the economic left–right axis remains central in UK party competition.

12. The Revolution / Radical Change Theorem |

Probability of Radical Regime Change ≈ (Inequality × Grievance × Organisation) ÷ Legitimacy of Incumbent

History shows that unrest turns into revolution only when certain ingredients combine. High inequality creates objective conditions, but people must also feel a strong sense of grievance – a subjective belief that the gap is unjust. Organisation is essential: without leaders and networks, discontent cannot be directed. Finally, the divisor is the legitimacy of the incumbent regime. If the government is widely seen as rightful and fair, even severe inequality may not trigger revolt. This theorem helps explain why revolutions are rare despite widespread inequality worldwide.
