📚 Year 11 Eduqas Economics Case Study Masterclass | Year 11 Eduqas

The case study question is the centrepiece of your Eduqas GCSE Economics exam. It demands more than just textbook definitions; you must apply, analyse and evaluate real-world data under timed conditions. This masterclass will walk you through a complete practice exercise, sharpening the skills that turn a good answer into a great one.

Eduqas Component 2 (Paper 2) always includes a substantial case study carrying high marks. The exam board wants to see you think like an economist, not just recall facts. You will be given a scenario – perhaps a firm raising prices, a government introducing a tax, or a country facing inflation – and asked to explain causes, consequences, and possible policies.

Success in the case study comes from three layers: knowledge (key terms, diagrams), application (linking every point to the context), and evaluation (weighing up alternatives, considering short-run vs long-run). This guide will practise all three with a realistic example.

2. Our Practice Case Study: Rising Coffee Prices |

Today’s case is based on a global supply shock. Read the extract carefully, then use it to answer the questions that follow. Mark allocation and command words are typical of Eduqas.

Extract: Global coffee bean production has fallen by 12% this year because of severe drought in Brazil, the world’s largest producer. At the same time, demand for premium coffee continues to rise in developed economies. As a result, the average retail price of ground coffee in the UK has increased from £3.20 to £4.50 per 250g bag. Several UK coffee shops have announced they will absorb part of the higher costs by reducing their profit margins, while others are passing the full increase on to consumers. The government is considering a temporary subsidy for coffee farmers to stabilise supplies.

3. Deconstructing the Command Words |

Before writing a single sentence, identify what each question is really asking. Eduqas uses precise command words. ‘Explain’ means give reasons and show how an effect works. ‘Analyse’ means break down into parts and examine impacts. ‘Evaluate’ means weigh up both sides and reach a supported judgement.

For our case study, typical questions might be: (a) Explain one reason why the price of coffee has risen. (2 marks); (b) Analyse the impact of higher coffee costs on a coffee shop’s revenue. (6 marks); (c) Evaluate whether a government subsidy is the best way to help coffee farmers. (8 marks).

4. Question (a): Explain – Supply and Demand in Action | 问题(a):解释——供需的实际作用

For 2 marks, you need one clear reason linked directly to the extract. Do not simply describe the data; explain the mechanism. A model answer might read: ‘Brazil’s drought has reduced the global supply of coffee beans. With supply falling and demand rising, there is a shortage at the old price, forcing the equilibrium price up. This is shown by a leftward shift of the supply curve.’

Always use a diagram if the question allows – even if not explicitly asked, a well-labelled supply and demand graph earns marks. Label axes (Price, Quantity), draw an upward-sloping supply curve S1, shift it left to S2, and show the new higher price P2.

5. Question (b): Analyse – Revenue and Price Elasticity | 问题(b):分析——收入与价格弹性

Here you must break the impact into parts and show how context affects the outcome. A 6-mark analysis requires chained reasoning. Key point: the effect on a coffee shop’s revenue depends on price elasticity of demand (PED) for its coffee. The extract mentions some shops absorb costs, implying they expect elastic demand – raising price would cause quantity demanded to fall proportionally more, reducing total revenue. Others pass costs on, suggesting they believe demand is inelastic.

Structure your answer: Define PED. Explain that if demand is elastic, a price rise lowers revenue. Relate to the shop absorbing costs – they keep price low to protect sales volume. Then show the opposite for inelastic demand – shops raising price see revenue rise despite a small drop in sales. Use a simple numerical example: if price rises 20% and demand is elastic (PED = –1.5), quantity falls 30%, revenue declines.

6. Using Diagrams to Boost Analysis Marks |

Diagrams are not optional for high marks. For the revenue analysis, draw two demand-side graphs: one showing a steep (inelastic) demand curve where a price increase leads to a larger revenue area, and another showing a flat (elastic) demand curve where revenue shrinks. Shade the revenue boxes and label P1, P2, Q1, Q2 clearly.

Every diagram must have a title and be referred to in your text. Write: ‘As shown in Figure 1, when demand is inelastic, the revenue gain from the higher price outweighs the revenue lost from the fall in quantity.’ This shows genuine analysis, not just description.

The 8-mark evaluation is where candidates separate themselves. Start with a clear decision: the subsidy is one option, but not automatically the best. Define what a subsidy is, then immediately identify the pros and cons. Benefits: stabilises farmer incomes, encourages continued production, prevents larger future price spikes. Drawbacks: costs taxpayers, may distort market signals, could be slow to implement.

Now consider alternatives. For instance, releasing strategic coffee reserves (if available), negotiating trade deals to diversify supply sources, or investing in drought-resistant coffee plants. For each, briefly weigh effectiveness versus the subsidy. A strong evaluation uses economic language: opportunity cost, government failure, long-run vs short-run.

8. Building a Evaluative Paragraph – WEESTEPS Structure | 构建评价段落——WEESTEPS 结构

To keep your evaluation focused, use a simple framework. You don’t need to memorise a mnemonic, but breaking your paragraph into logical steps helps: (1) Weigh the strongest argument for the subsidy; (2) Explain a significant weakness; (3) Examine an alternative policy; (4) Show why context matters (e.g. urgency of the drought); (5) Time horizon – short-run vs long-run; (6) Evidence from the case; (7) Prioritise and conclude; (8) Synthesis – how this links back to the economic problem.

A worked example: ‘A subsidy provides immediate income support for farmers (strength). However, it does not solve the underlying problem of climate vulnerability (weakness). Investment in drought-resistant crops could be more sustainable long-term, though it takes years to develop (alternative + time). Given the current price spike, a temporary subsidy combined with long-term investment may be the most balanced approach (judgement).’

9. Common Pitfalls in Eduqas Case Studies | Eduqas

Top students lose marks by ignoring the extract. Never write a generic essay about supply and demand; you must quote figures, reference the specific country (Brazil), and mention ‘drought’ and ‘premium coffee’. Application means weaving the case facts into every paragraph.

Another trap is imbalance. If a question says ‘evaluate’, you must present both sides. A one-sided answer is capped at low marks. Also, avoid unsupported assertions. Instead of ‘the subsidy is bad’, say ‘the subsidy incurs an opportunity cost because the government could use those funds for drought research, which addresses the root cause.’

10. Time Management During the Exam |

You have roughly 30–35 minutes for the case study section in Component 2. Allocate time proportionally to marks: 2–3 minutes for a 2-mark question, 8–10 minutes for a 6-mark analysis, and 12–15 minutes for an 8-mark evaluation. Spend the first 5 minutes reading the extract and annotating key points.

Plan the evaluation answer before writing. A quick list of bullet points on the question paper will keep you on track. Leave 2 minutes at the end to check you have used the extract, drawn diagrams, and answered all parts of the question.

11. Mark Scheme Insights – What Examiners Reward |

Examiners look for ‘chains of reasoning’ – linking cause to effect step by step. For analysis, you need two or more linked points. For evaluation, you must provide a ‘substantiated judgement’ that weighs evidence. Simply listing pros and cons is not enough; you must conclude which factor is most important and why.

Terms like ‘therefore’, ‘this leads to’, ‘as a consequence’, and ‘however’ signal logical flow. Use precise economics vocabulary: market equilibrium, disequilibrium, price mechanism, externalities, government intervention, market failure. These show deeper understanding.

12. Final Practice Task – Your Turn |

Now apply the techniques to a fresh scenario. Imagine the UK government raises the minimum wage for workers aged 21+ by 10%. A case study describes a local fast-food restaurant that relies heavily on young workers. The owner fears higher costs and is considering raising prices or reducing staff hours. Answer these questions: (a) Explain one opportunity cost of raising prices for the restaurant. (2 marks); (b) Analyse how the minimum wage increase might affect employment at the restaurant. (6 marks); (c) Evaluate whether raising prices is the best response for the restaurant. (8 marks).

Use the framework above, draw a labour market diagram for part (b) showing a price floor (minimum wage) above equilibrium, and for part (c) discuss elasticity of demand for fast food, the nature of the product, competition, and the alternative of reducing hours. This practice will cement your skills.
