1. What is Knowledge?

In epistemology, the traditional analysis defines knowledge as justified true belief (JTB). A subject S knows that p if and only if: (i) p is true; (ii) S believes that p; and (iii) S has justification for believing that p. This tripartite definition can be traced back to Plato’s Theaetetus, and for centuries it was widely accepted as capturing the essence of knowledge.

However, Edmund Gettier’s 1963 paper presented counterexamples that overturned the sufficiency of the JTB model. In one classic case, Smith has strong evidence that Jones owns a Ford, and from this he infers the disjunction ‘Either Jones owns a Ford or Brown is in Barcelona’. Unbeknownst to Smith, Jones has sold his car, but coincidentally Brown happens to be in Barcelona. Smith has a justified true belief in the disjunction, yet intuitively this is not knowledge—it is just luck. The Gettier problem demonstrates that justification, truth and belief together are not sufficient for knowledge.

Philosophers have responded with revised conditions, such as adding a ‘no false lemmas’ requirement, or shifting to reliabilism (knowledge is produced by a reliable cognitive process) or virtue epistemology (knowledge requires the exercise of intellectual virtue). These alternatives form a central debating point in AS epistemology.

2. Theories of Perception |

Direct realism claims that we perceive physical objects directly and that they exist independently of our minds. When I see a tree, I am directly aware of the tree itself, not an inner representation. This theory faces the challenge of illusion and hallucination: if a straight stick looks bent in water, what we are directly seeing cannot be the stick as it really is, threatening the directness of perception.

Indirect realism (representationalism) holds that we perceive physical objects indirectly via sense-data. Sense-data are the immediate objects of awareness, caused by mind-independent objects. This explains illusions and hallucinations, but leads to sceptical worries: if we only ever access sense-data, how can we know that an external world exists? John Locke’s distinction between primary and secondary qualities is a classic version, though Berkeley famously argued against the existence of a mind-independent material world altogether.

Idealism asserts that the only things that exist are minds and their ideas; physical objects are collections of ideas perceived by God. Phenomenalism, a radical development, analyses physical objects in terms of actual and possible sense-experiences. For an AS candidate, it is crucial to compare these responses and evaluate how well they account for the common-sense view of perception.

3. Rationalism vs. Empiricism |

Rationalism holds that some knowledge can be acquired independently of sense experience, through reason alone. Descartes, for example, argued for innate ideas such as the concept of God and mathematical truths. His method of doubt led to the cogito—’I think, therefore I am’—as an indubitable foundation. A priori knowledge, if possible, would give us certainty not achievable through the senses.

Empiricism, by contrast, asserts that all knowledge ultimately originates in sense experience. Locke described the mind as a tabula rasa (blank slate) at birth, with simple ideas derived from sensation and reflection, which are then combined to form complex ideas. Hume pushed empiricism to its limits, arguing that causal connections are not rationally demonstrable but merely habits of association. This leads to a more limited scope for knowledge claims.

A central tension between the two schools concerns synthetic a priori knowledge—can we have genuinely informative knowledge that is not based on experience? Kant’s attempt to synthesise rationalism and empiricism is often touched upon in AS revision, highlighting how the mind actively structures experience.

4. Metaethics: Cognitivism vs. Non-cognitivism |

Cognitivism in metaethics claims that moral judgments express beliefs that can be true or false. Ethical naturalism, a form of cognitivism, holds that moral properties are identical with natural properties (e.g., ‘good’ means ‘maximises happiness’). G. E. Moore objected with the open question argument, stating that any attempt to define ‘good’ in natural terms fails because we can always intelligibly ask whether something with that natural property is good. He called this the naturalistic fallacy.

Non-cognitivism denies that moral judgments express truth-apt beliefs. According to A. J. Ayer’s emotivism, moral utterances like ‘stealing is wrong’ simply express or evoke feelings—they are neither true nor false. They function more like ‘Boo for stealing!’. C. L. Stevenson further developed this, and later R. M. Hare’s prescriptivism argued that moral language is used to prescribe actions and commit oneself to universalised principles. These views need careful evaluation, especially regarding their ability to account for moral disagreement and reasoning.

5. Normative Ethics: Consequentialism, Deontology & Virtue Ethics |

Utilitarianism, a major consequentialist theory, holds that the right action is the one that maximises utility (usually happiness). Bentham’s classical utilitarianism uses the hedonic calculus to measure pleasure, while Mill introduced qualitative distinctions between higher and lower pleasures. Critics charge that utilitarianism can justify injustice if it promotes greater overall happiness, and that it is too demanding. Rule utilitarianism attempts to address some of these objections by focusing on rules that tend to maximise utility.

Kantian deontology is based on the categorical imperative, requiring that we act only on maxims that can be universalised and that we treat humanity, in ourselves and others, always as an end and never merely as a means. This theory honours human dignity and rules out actions like lying promise, regardless of consequences. However, it faces the problem of conflicting duties and the charge of being overly rigid. Virtue ethics, inspired by Aristotle, shifts the focus from acts to the agent’s character: an action is right if it is what a virtuous person would characteristically do. The doctrine of the mean provides a framework, but it can be criticised for lacking clear action-guidance.

6. Teleological and Cosmological Arguments |

The teleological (design) argument claims that the complexity and apparent purpose in the natural world indicate an intelligent designer. William Paley’s watchmaker analogy is the classic formulation: if you found a watch on a heath, its intricate arrangement of parts would suggest a watchmaker; similarly, the even greater complexity of the universe suggests a divine designer. Hume’s criticisms, articulated through the characters in his Dialogues, remain powerful: the analogy between the universe and a machine is weak; the argument does not establish a single, infinite or all-good God; and apparent design could be the result of chance over vast time periods.

The cosmological argument seeks a first cause or necessary being to explain the existence of the universe. Aquinas’s ‘Five Ways’ include the argument from motion: a chain of movers cannot go back infinitely, so there must be an unmoved mover, God. More recently, the Kalam cosmological argument asserts that the universe had a beginning, and whatever begins to exist has a cause; therefore, the universe has a transcendent cause. Critics question why the first cause must be identified with God, and whether an infinite regress is truly impossible. Hume and others have argued that the universe itself may be a necessary being, or that the principle of sufficient reason is not self-evident.

7. The Problem of Evil |

The logical problem of evil, as formulated by J. L. Mackie, claims that the combination of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent and omniscient God with the existence of evil is logically inconsistent. A truly benevolent God would want to prevent evil, an omnipotent God would be able to prevent it, and an omniscient God would know about it. Yet evil exists; therefore, such a God cannot exist. Mackie’s argument is deductive and seeks to expose a contradiction within theism.

The most influential response is the free will defense, developed by Alvin Plantinga. He argues that it is possible that God, though omnipotent, could not create a world containing moral good without also allowing the possibility of moral evil, because free will is valuable and moral evil results from the misuse of that freedom. This defense aims to show that Mackie’s logical inconsistency does not hold. The evidential problem of evil, however, is inductive: given the sheer amount and distribution of seemingly pointless suffering, it is highly unlikely that an all-good God exists. Theodicies, such as soul-making (Irenaeus/Hick), attempt to justify God’s ways by arguing that suffering is necessary for character development, but their plausibility is fiercely debated.

8. Philosophy of Mind: Dualism and Physicalism |

Substance dualism, most famously defended by Descartes, holds that the mind and the body are two distinct substances: the mind is non-physical (res cogitans) and the body is physical (res extensa). The main strength is its alignment with the intuitive sense that consciousness is fundamentally different from matter. However, the interaction problem is severe: if mind and body are radically different, how can they causally interact? Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia’s objections remain a key exam topic.

Physicalism rejects non-physical substances. Behaviourism (philosophical version) analyses mental states in terms of behavioural dispositions, but struggles with the inner feel of mental states—the qualia problem. The identity theory claims that mental states are numerically identical to brain states; this elegantly solves interaction, but multiple realisability (the same mental state may be realised by different brain states across species) challenges strict identity. Functionalism then defines mental states by their causal roles: a pain is whatever state is caused by tissue damage and causes wincing, avoidance behaviour, etc. Functionalism allows multiple realisability, yet faces the so-called absent qualia and inverted spectrum problems. Property dualism, defended by David Chalmers, accepts that the world is made of one substance (physical) but that mental properties are non-reducible and distinct.

9. Political Philosophy: Liberty and Equality |

Robert Nozick’s libertarianism, presented in Anarchy, State, and Utopia, defends the minimal state justified only by the protection of individual rights. According to the entitlement theory, holdings are just if they are acquired, transferred and rectified in accordance with principles of justice. Nozick famously argues that patterned principles of distributive justice (like equality) require constant interference with individuals’ lives, and that ‘taxation of earnings from labour is on a par with forced labour’. His Wilt Chamberlain example aims to show how liberty upsets patterns.

In contrast, John Rawls’s theory of justice as fairness argues that inequalities can be justified only if they benefit the least advantaged and are attached to positions open to all under fair equality of opportunity. The original position behind the veil of ignorance is a thought experiment designed to yield impartial principles. Rawls’s difference principle permits inequalities that improve the situation of the worst-off group. Debates between these two frameworks run through AS political philosophy: liberty versus equality, procedural versus substantive justice, and the role of the state in redistributing resources.

10. Revision and Exam Strategies |

CIE AS Philosophy questions typically demand two skills: knowledge and understanding (AO1) and analysis and evaluation (AO2). For AO1, ensure you can clearly explain key arguments, positions and technical terms without over-simplifying. Use examples: e.g., the Gettier case, Paley’s watch, the Wilt Chamberlain example. For AO2, always evaluate the arguments you present; weigh strengths and weaknesses, consider possible replies and counter-replies, and form a balanced conclusion where appropriate.
