📚 Year 12 WJEC Music: Terminology Quick-Memorisation Guide | Year 12 WJEC
Building a secure command of musical terminology is the single most effective thing you can do to raise your marks across all components of the WJEC Year 12 Music course. Whether you are writing programme notes, analysing set works, or describing aural extracts, precise Italian, German and French terms allow you to communicate with the clarity that examiners reward. This guide organises the essential vocabulary into logical categories, pairing each term with its literal meaning, its practical musical context, and a brief mnemonic or ‘quick-remember’ tip that has been road-tested in real examination settings.
1. Dynamics and Expression |
Dynamics describe the volume of sound, but expression marks tell you about the character and emotional temperature of the music. WJEC questions frequently ask candidates to identify how a change in dynamic level shapes the dramatic arc of an extract, so knowing the gradations and their abbreviations is non-negotiable. Start with the eight core terms — pp, p, mp, mf, f, ff, crescendo, diminuendo — and then layer on the expressive qualifiers such as dolce, espressivo and sforzando that appear throughout the set works.
The term pianissimo (pp) means ‘very soft’ and is often used to create a sense of intimacy or mystery. Think of it as the musical equivalent of a whisper — you lean in to listen, and that engagement is precisely what the composer wants. In the opposite direction, fortissimo (ff) means ‘very loud’ and signals climax, power, or overwhelming emotion; it is the orchestral shout that leaves no audience member untouched.
Crescendo (gradually getting louder) and diminuendo (gradually getting softer) are process-based dynamic markings rather than fixed states. A well-placed crescendo builds tension; a tapered diminuendo releases it. In the score, look for the hairpin symbols (< and >) or the abbreviated words cresc. and dim. — both are equally common in WJEC extracts. The mnemonic ‘crescendo = climb’ can help non-Italian speakers remember the direction of the volume change.
Crescendo(渐强)和 diminuendo(渐弱)是基于过程的力度标记,而非固定状态。
Expression marks modify the character of the music within a given dynamic. Dolce means ‘sweet’ and suggests a gentle, lyrical approach; espressivo means ‘expressive’ and gives the performer licence to stretch tempo and dynamics freely. Sforzando (sfz) is a sudden, sharp accent on a single note or chord — it jolts the texture and often marks an important structural moment worth mentioning in your commentary.
2. Tempo and Pulse |
Tempo indications govern the speed of the pulse, but they also carry deep stylistic connotations. A movement marked Largo is not merely ‘slow’ — it inhabits a world of breadth, solemnity and gravity. Similarly, Allegro is not just ‘fast’ but suggests cheerfulness, energy and forward drive. WJEC examiners expect you to describe tempo with both the objective Italian term and a subjective comment on its expressive effect, so building a rich vocabulary here pays dividends.
The core tempo terms form a spectrum: Grave (very slow, solemn), Largo (broad and slow), Adagio (slow, at ease), Andante (walking pace), Moderato (moderate speed), Allegretto (moderately fast, lighter than Allegro), Allegro (fast, cheerful), Vivace (lively and quick), Presto (very fast). A useful memory trick: imagine a person walking — Grave is a funeral procession, Andante is a relaxed stroll, and Presto is a sprint for the bus.
核心速度术语构成一个光谱:Grave(极慢,庄严)、Largo(宽广而缓慢)、Adagio(从容的慢速)、Andante(步行速度)、Moderato(中速)、Allegretto(中等偏快,比 Allegro 轻盈)、Allegro(快,欢快)、Vivace(活泼敏捷)、Presto(极快)。
Modifying terms alter the basic tempo: molto (very), poco (a little), non troppo (not too much), and con moto (with movement). For instance, Allegro non troppo means ‘fast, but not too fast’ — a nuance that matters when comparing interpretations of the same work. The addition of -issimo to a tempo word intensifies it: Prestissimo is the fastest possible speed, a blur of notes that challenges even professional players.
修饰性术语可以改变基本速度:molto(非常)、poco(稍微)、non troppo(不过分)、con moto(带有动感)。
Tempo changes within a movement require their own vocabulary. Ritardando (rit.) means gradually slowing down; Accelerando (accel.) means gradually speeding up. Rallentando (rall.) also means slowing down but often implies a broader, more relaxed unwinding. A tempo directs the performer to return to the original speed after a deviation. A rubato marking gives permission to flex the tempo expressively — literally ‘robbed time’, where slight accelerations are balanced by later decelerations to preserve the overall pulse. When you hear rubato in a WJEC extract, comment on its role in shaping the phrase’s emotional arc.
Ritardando (rit.) Rallentando (rall.)
3. Articulation and Touch |
Articulation describes how individual notes are attacked, sustained and released — it is the musical equivalent of diction in speech. Two performers can play the same pitches at the same tempo, yet one sounds crisp and detached while the other sounds smooth and seamless; the difference lies entirely in articulation decisions. WJEC questions often zoom in on articulation changes, especially in Classical and Romantic set works where the contrast between legato and staccato carries structural significance.
Legato means smooth and connected; notes flow into one another without perceptible gaps. In string playing, legato is achieved through full bow strokes with seamless direction changes; in singing, it requires uninterrupted breath control. Staccato (abbreviated as a dot above or below the notehead) means short and detached, cutting each note’s duration roughly in half. Think of staccato as musical raindrops — each one distinct, each one brief. Tenuto (a short horizontal line above or below the notehead) means ‘held’ — you sustain the note for its full value, often with a slight emphasis, creating a sense of breadth and weight.
Staccato(缩写为音符上方或下方的圆点)意为短促分离,将每个音符的时值大致减半。
More specialised articulation marks include marcato (marked, accented — indicated by an inverted V above the note), which demands a strong, separated attack heavier than a standard accent; portamento, a sliding movement between two pitches most common in vocal and string writing; and pizzicato (pizz.), where string players pluck the strings with their fingers instead of using the bow. The opposite of pizzicato is arco — a return to bowing. These directional terms appear frequently in the score extracts provided in WJEC papers, so train yourself to spot them at a glance.
In piano music, articulation is intimately tied to touch. Terms such as leggiero (light, nimble) and pesante (heavy, ponderous) direct the pianist’s physical approach to the keyboard. Cantabile means ‘singing’ and asks for a sustained, vocal-style melody line even on a percussion-based instrument. When you see these words in a set-work score, they unlock a whole layer of interpretive insight that will elevate your analysis beyond mere description of pitches and rhythms.
Leggiero(轻巧、敏捷)和 pesante(沉重、滞重)等术语指引着钢琴家接触键盘的身体方式。
4. Structure and Form |
Understanding musical architecture — how composers organise ideas across time — is fundamental to WJEC analysis tasks. Structural terms enable you to map a piece, identify key thematic events, and explain why a return to the tonic at a particular moment carries such emotional weight. The most commonly examined forms in Year 12 are binary, ternary, sonata form, rondo, theme and variations, and strophic form, though you should also be comfortable recognising through-composed structures and ground bass patterns.
Binary form (AB) divides a movement into two sections, each typically repeated. The first section moves away from the tonic, the second section returns. Baroque dance suites are full of binary movements, and an examiner may ask you to comment on how the harmonic journey of each section creates a different expressive colour. Ternary form (ABA) frames a contrasting middle section with a return of the opening material; the return is often decorated or slightly varied, giving performers the chance to demonstrate interpretive imagination.
Sonata form — the great dramatic engine of the Classical and early Romantic periods — consists of three main sections: exposition (where thematic groups are presented in contrasting keys), development (where those themes are fragmented, recombined and pushed through distant harmonic territories), and recapitulation (where the themes return, but now all in the tonic key). You may also encounter an introduction and a coda. The mnemonic ‘Every Day Returns Calm’ (Exposition, Development, Recapitulation — and Coda if needed) can anchor this structure in your memory under exam pressure.
Rondo form (ABACA, or occasionally ABACABA) places a recurring refrain between contrasting episodes. The return of A creates a satisfying sense of homecoming each time, and composers often vary the refrain subtly to maintain interest. Theme and variations presents a melody followed by a series of altered versions, each exploring a different musical parameter — rhythm, harmony, texture, tempo, register. When analysing a variation movement, always identify which parameter has been transformed and what has been preserved from the original theme; this demonstrates forensic listening that examiners value.
Strophic form repeats the same music for each verse of a song (verses are labelled with different text but identical or near-identical musical settings). It is extremely common in folk song, hymnody and art song. The opposite is through-composed, where the music changes continuously to follow the semantic content of the text, with little or no repetition of whole sections. Understanding this distinction will strengthen your commentary on vocal set works significantly.
5. Melodic Features and Ornamentation |
Melody is the surface that listeners remember and hum, but behind a memorable tune lies a web of deliberate compositional decisions about shape, range, interval content and ornamentation. WJEC questions on melody go beyond simple identification of conjunct versus disjunct motion; they expect you to discuss how the melodic contour contributes to the expressive narrative and how ornaments function within the style of the period.
A conjunct melody moves predominantly by step (adjacent scale degrees) and is often described as smooth, flowing, or vocal in character. A disjunct melody contains frequent leaps, which generate a sense of angularity, drama, or even agitation. Most melodies mix both types, but extremes exist: a Baroque chorale prelude may feature almost entirely conjunct motion, while an expressionist vocal line may leap wildly across the singer’s range to convey psychological distress. When studying your set works, trace the melodic contour phrase by phrase and note the emotional correlation — this kind of systematic mapping is exactly what high-scoring candidates produce in the examination.
Ornaments are decorative figures that embellish the structural notes of a melody. The most common include: trill (rapid alternation between the written note and the note above), turn (a four-note figure that encircles the main note), mordent (a rapid single alternation — upper mordent goes up, lower mordent goes down), acciaccatura (a crushed, very brief grace note played almost simultaneously with the main note), and appoggiatura (a grace note that takes half the value of the main note and leans expressively into it, literally ‘leaning note’). Baroque and Classical scores are thick with these symbols, so compile a visual flashcard deck for speedy recognition under timed conditions.
Beyond ornaments, other melodic descriptors merit a place in your toolkit. Sequence is the repetition of a melodic pattern at a higher or lower pitch; when the intervals are preserved exactly it is a real sequence, and when adjusted to stay within the key it is a tonal sequence. Ostinato is a persistently repeated melodic or rhythmic figure, often in the bass, that creates a hypnotic or driving effect. Motif is a short, distinctive melodic-rhythmic cell that becomes the building block for larger structures — think of the four-note opening of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, arguably the most famous motif in the Western canon. Being able to spot and discuss motivic development throughout a movement is a hallmark of sophisticated musical analysis.
6. Harmony and Tonality |
Harmonic vocabulary enables you to describe the vertical dimension of music — which chords are used, how they relate to one another, and what emotional effect their succession produces. Tonality locates the music within a key system, whether it is firmly anchored in a diatonic home key or drifting through chromatic ambiguities. WJEC set works span several centuries of harmonic practice, so you need terms that cover both functional tonality (Baroque to late Romantic) and post-tonal approaches where traditional cadence hierarchies dissolve.
The diatonic chords built on each scale degree have Roman numeral labels that are universally used in analysis: I (tonic), ii (supertonic), iii (mediant), IV (subdominant), V (dominant), vi (submediant), vii° (leading-tone diminished). In a major key, uppercase numerals indicate major chords (I, IV, V) and lowercase indicate minor chords (ii, iii, vi). The dominant seventh chord (V⁷) — the dominant triad with an added minor seventh — was the engine of Western harmony for two centuries, its tension demanding resolution to the tonic with an almost gravitational force. A perfect cadence (V–I) gives a sense of finality and closure; an imperfect cadence (any chord ending on V) sounds incomplete and expectant; a plagal cadence (IV–I, the ‘Amen’ cadence) conveys a softer, more devotional resolution; and an interrupted cadence (V–vi) subverts expectation, deflecting closure onto the submediant chord for dramatic surprise.
建立在每个音级上的自然音和弦拥有在分析中通用的罗马数字标签:I(主和弦)、ii(上主和弦)、iii(中和弦)、IV(下属和弦)、V(属和弦)、vi(下中和弦)、vii°(导音减和弦)。
Modulation — the process of changing key within a piece — is a crucial structural device. You should be able to identify modulations to closely related keys (the dominant, subdominant, and relative minor/major) and comment on their expressive purpose. Chromatic harmony uses notes outside the prevailing key signature to intensify emotional colour; it became increasingly prevalent in the Romantic period, weakening the gravitational pull of the tonic and paving the way for the dissolution of tonality in the early twentieth century. When chromaticism appears in a set work, link it explicitly to the text or dramatic context — examiners look for this kind of integrated reasoning rather than isolated observations.
Some other essential harmonic terms: pedal note (a sustained or repeated note, usually in the bass, over which changing harmonies create tension), drone (a continuous, unchanging pitch or fifth, often folk-inspired), dissonance (an interval or chord that sounds unstable and requires resolution), consonance (an interval or chord that sounds stable and at rest), and suspension (a note held over from a previous chord before resolving downwards by step — a classic source of expressive tension in tonal music).
7. Texture and Sonority |
Texture refers to how many layers of sound are present and how they relate to one another. Sonority describes the characteristic quality of a particular instrument, voice-type, or ensemble blend. Together, texture and sonority account for the ‘colour’ of the musical canvas, and WJEC questions frequently ask both for identification of the prevailing texture and for analysis of how texture changes shape the musical narrative.
The fundamental texture types form a clear taxonomy. Monophony is a single melodic line with no accompaniment — plainchant is the classic example, but a solo unaccompanied violin passage qualifies too. Homophony features a prominent melody supported by chordal accompaniment; this is the default texture of most Classical and Romantic music, from Mozart arias to Chopin nocturnes. Within homophony, watch for the distinction between melody-dominated homophony (clear hierarchy between tune and accompaniment) and chordal homophony (all parts move in the same rhythm, as in a hymn). Polyphony or contrapuntal texture weaves together two or more independent melodic lines of equal interest — Bach fugues, Renaissance motets, and the development sections of many Classical symphonies exemplify polyphonic writing.
Heterophony is a less common but important texture in which two or more performers simultaneously present slightly different versions of the same melody. It appears in folk traditions worldwide and occasionally in twentieth-century Western scores influenced by folk and non-Western practices. Antiph
