1. The Weimar Constitution |

The Weimar Constitution of 1919 established a democratic republic with universal suffrage, proportional representation and strong presidential powers under Article 48. It emerged from the chaos of post‑war Germany and was designed to prevent a return to autocracy.

Key features included an elected Reichstag, a President elected every seven years, and a Chancellor who needed majority support. The constitution was widely criticised for creating a fragmented party system and for enabling presidential rule by decree under emergency conditions.

2. Treaty of Versailles |

The Treaty of Versailles was signed in June 1919 and imposed harsh terms on Germany: acceptance of war guilt (Article 231), massive reparations of 132 billion gold marks, military restrictions to 100,000 men, and loss of territory including Alsace‑Lorraine and the Polish Corridor.

Germans across the political spectrum denounced the treaty as a ‘Diktat’ (dictated peace). It became a powerful tool for right‑wing propaganda, fuelling the stab‑in‑the‑back myth and undermining the legitimacy of the Weimar Republic from its birth.

3. Economic Crises and Hyperinflation |

In 1923, Germany defaulted on reparations payments, leading to the French occupation of the Ruhr. The government’s policy of passive resistance and massive printing of money caused hyperinflation, wiping out savings and devastating the middle class.

By November 1923 a loaf of bread cost billions of marks. The crisis was resolved by the introduction of the Rentenmark under Chancellor Stresemann, but the trauma left deep scars and later influenced support for extremist parties.

4. The Stresemann Era (1924–1929) |

Gustav Stresemann served as Chancellor and later as Foreign Minister, ushering in a period of relative stability. His policies included the Dawes Plan (1924) for re‑scheduled reparations, the Locarno Treaties (1925) normalising western borders, and Germany’s entry into the League of Nations (1926).

Despite economic recovery and cultural flourishing—the ‘Golden Twenties’—the period was built on foreign loans and precarious political coalitions. Tensions over reparations and the rise of extremist parties never fully disappeared.

5. Rise of the Nazi Party |

The German Workers’ Party, led by Anton Drexler, was rebranded as the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) in 1920. Adolf Hitler joined in 1919 and quickly became its leading figure, promoting a programme combining nationalism, anti‑Semitism and anti‑communism.

The party’s failed Munich Putsch in 1923 gave Hitler national publicity and a lenient prison sentence during which he wrote Mein Kampf. After 1925 the NSDAP shifted to legal tactics, building a nationwide organisation and appealing to voters disillusioned with Weimar.

6. The Great Depression and Collapse of Democracy |

The Wall Street Crash of 1929 triggered a global depression that hit Germany severely. Unemployment soared to six million, industrial production halved, and the coalition government under Müller fell in 1930.

Subsequent Chancellors Brüning, Papen and Schleicher ruled largely by presidential decree under Article 48. The political centre collapsed while NSDAP and KPD support surged, making parliamentary government impossible.

7. Hitler’s Appointment as Chancellor |

In the elections of July and November 1932, the NSDAP became the largest party but failed to win an overall majority. After intense backroom negotiations, President Hindenburg appointed Hitler Chancellor on 30 January 1933, believing he could be controlled by conservatives in the cabinet.

The coalition government included only two other Nazis—Göring and Frick—but Hitler quickly outmanoeuvred his conservative partners, using the Reichstag Fire to push for emergency decrees that dismantled civil liberties.

8. Consolidation of Power 1933–1934 | 1933–1934

The Reichstag Fire Decree (February 1933) suspended key civil rights and allowed mass arrests of communists. The Enabling Act (March 1933) gave Hitler the power to pass laws without the Reichstag, effectively ending democracy.

By July 1933 all political parties except the NSDAP were banned. The Night of the Long Knives (June 1934) eliminated the SA leadership and other opponents. After Hindenburg’s death in August 1934, Hitler merged the offices of Chancellor and President, becoming Führer.

9. The Nazi Police State | 纳粹警察国家

The Nazi regime relied on a network of terror: the SS under Himmler, the Gestapo (secret police), and concentration camps like Dachau. The legal system was restructured to serve Nazi ideology, with judges sworn to ‘people’s justice’.

Propaganda, orchestrated by Joseph Goebbels, saturated public life through radio, film and print. Widespread denunciation by ordinary citizens fostered an atmosphere of fear and conformity that sustained the dictatorship.

10. Nazi Social and Economic Policies |

The regime reduced unemployment through public works (autobahns), rearmament and the Reich Labour Service. The economy was geared towards autarky and preparation for war under the Four‑Year Plan of 1936.

Social policies promoted traditional gender roles: women were encouraged to focus on Kinder, Küche, Kirche (children, kitchen, church). The Hitler Youth and League of German Maidens indoctrinated the young, while education was made to serve racial and ideological goals.

11. Persecution and the Road to Genocide |

Racial ideology centred on a hierarchy with ‘Aryans’ at the top. The Nuremberg Laws (1935) stripped Jews of citizenship and banned marriages between Jews and Germans. Kristallnacht (1938) marked an escalation with violent attacks on synagogues and businesses.

During the war, the persecution radicalised into systematic genocide. The Wannsee Conference (1942) coordinated the ‘Final Solution’, leading to the murder of six million Jews in extermination camps.

12. Foreign Policy and World War II |

Hitler’s foreign policy aims included overturning Versailles, uniting German‑speaking peoples, and acquiring Lebensraum (living space) in the east. These goals were pursued through the Saar plebiscite (1935), remilitarisation of the Rhineland (1936), Anschluss with Austria (1938) and the Munich Agreement (1938).

Appeasement by Britain and France failed to prevent the invasion of Czechoslovakia and, ultimately, Poland in September 1939, which triggered the war. The conflict ended with Germany’s unconditional surrender in May 1945.
