📚 Year 12 AQA Drama: 2026 Exam Reforms and Key Trends | AQA 12

The AQA A-level Drama and Theatre specification is undergoing its most significant overhaul since 2016, with first teaching from September 2024 and first examinations in summer 2026. For current Year 12 students, these changes will shape every element of the course, from the set texts studied to the way practical work is assessed. Understanding the reforms early is essential for success in both the written and practical components.

1. Overview of the 2026 Reforms | 2026

The 2026 exams mark the first assessment of the refreshed AQA 7262 (A-level) and 7261 (AS) specifications. The overarching aim is to modernise the subject, enhance academic rigour, and ensure a closer alignment between written analysis and practical exploration. While the overall weighting of components remains unchanged (40% written, 60% practical for A-level), the internal structure, question styles, and set text lists have been extensively revised. AS students also face parallel changes, with a new written paper and a redesigned practical component.

2. Component 1: Drama and Theatre – New Written Exam Structure |

Component 1 remains a 3-hour written paper worth 80 marks (40% of A-level), but the internal configuration has been refined. The three sections are now more distinctly tiered in terms of the skills they assess. Section A focuses on a pre-20th century play and demands both extract-based analysis and holistic essay writing. Section B centres on a 20th or 21st century play and offers a choice between two questions, each from a different theatrical perspective. Section C continues to require a detailed evaluation of a live theatre production, but with a sharper focus on a single element of performance or design.

3. Section A: Drama through the Ages – Extended Analysis | A部分:穿越时代的戏剧——深度分析

One of the most notable shifts is the division of Section A into two compulsory sub-questions (25 marks each). The first sub-question provides an unseen extract from the chosen set play and asks candidates to explore how they would stage it, considering aspects such as directing, performance, or design. The second sub-question requires a broader evaluation of the play as a whole, often demanding a response to a critical statement or a debate about interpretation. This dual focus rewards both close reading of text and a wider understanding of theatrical meaning.

4. Section B: 20th and 21st Century Drama – Option Choices | B

Section B now presents students with two essay questions on their chosen contemporary play, each worth 30 marks. One question typically adopts a performer’s lens, asking how the candidate would approach a specific role or scene. The other invites a designer’s perspective, exploring sound, lighting, set, or costume in relation to the extract provided. This structure allows candidates to play to their strengths, whether they are more comfortable discussing acting techniques or design concepts. The stimulus includes a short extract to ground the discussion in concrete textual detail.

5. Section C: Live Theatre – Sharpened Evaluation | C

The live theatre evaluation question remains a 30-mark assignment, but the wording now directs students to concentrate on one specific element of the production they have seen, such as the contribution of a particular performer or the use of set and lighting. This tighter focus discourages vague, generalised commentary and pushes candidates to demonstrate a nuanced understanding of how theatre practitioners create meaning for an audience. Students must still refer to a professionally produced play witnessed in a performance space, and it cannot be the same play studied for Section A or B.

6. Component 2: Creating Original Drama – Refined Assessment Criteria |

The practical component in which students devise an original piece of theatre in groups remains worth 80 marks (30% of A-level). However, the supporting creative log has been given a more prominent role. The log, typically 2500-3000 words, must now explicitly document the devising process, the influence of a recognised theatre practitioner, and a critical reflection on the final performance. The performance itself is assessed on the quality of acting and design, as well as the clarity of artistic intention. Working collaboratively and responding to feedback are more heavily weighted than in the previous specification.

7. Component 3: Making Theatre – Extracts and Reflection |

For Component 3 (80 marks, 30%), students prepare three extracts from three different plays. At least one extract must be performed as a performer, and at least one must be realised through design or direction. The new specification introduces a formal requirement to articulate the influence of a specific theatre practitioner or company on the creative choices made. The reflective report, which accompanies the assessed presentation, is now expected to analyse how the chosen practitioner’s methodology shaped rehearsals, character development, or design realisation. This deepens the academic link between theory and practice.

8. Revamped Set Text Lists |

AQA has refreshed both List A (pre-20th century) and List B (20th and 21st century) to reflect a broader range of voices and styles. While foundational works such as Sophocles’ “Antigone” and Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” remain, they now sit alongside recently added plays that challenge students to engage with diverse cultural contexts. The following table highlights some of the key additions and retentions.

AQA更新了列表A(前20世纪)和列表B(20与21世纪),以反映更广泛的声音与风格。

List Play Playwright Status
A Antigone Sophocles Retained
A The Tempest William Shakespeare Retained
A Our Country’s Good Timberlake Wertenbaker New
B The Mountaintop Katori Hall New
B Leave Taking Winsome Pinnock New
B Jerusalem Jez Butterworth New
B The Effect Lucy Prebble New
B A Streetcar Named Desire Tennessee Williams Retained

These changes ensure that students encounter texts from female playwrights, global majority backgrounds, and a variety of theatrical traditions, preparing them for contemporary discourse in the arts.
