1. Media Language and Semiotics |
Semiotics is the study of signs. A sign combines a signifier (the physical form, like a word or image) with a signified (the mental concept). A red heart emoji is a signifier, while love is the signified.
Denotation is the literal, descriptive meaning. Connotation refers to the cultural and emotional associations a sign carries. A skull denotes a human cranium; it connotes danger or mortality.
Anchorage is the use of text (captions, headlines) to fix a preferred meaning and limit alternative readings. Polysemy describes the capacity of a sign to have multiple meanings before anchoring occurs.
Mise-en-scène encompasses everything placed in front of the camera: setting, lighting, costume, figure expression and props. It creates mood and conveys character.
2. Narrative Conventions |
Narrative refers to how a story is organised and told. A linear narrative follows chronological order; a non-linear narrative employs flashbacks, flashforwards or parallel editing.
Todorov’s equilibrium theory proposes that narratives begin with a stable state (equilibrium), suffer a disruption (disequilibrium), and resolve into a new equilibrium. This three-part structure underpins countless films.
Barthes identified the enigma code (a mystery or puzzle that hooks the audience) and the action code (events that imply further action, building tension). Together they drive the story forward.
Propp analysed folk tales and found recurring character archetypes: the hero, villain, princess, donor, helper, dispatcher, and false hero. These spheres of action still appear in modern media.
Binary oppositions, a concept from Lévi-Strauss, are pairs of opposing forces (good vs evil, civilisation vs wilderness) that structure narratives and reveal dominant ideologies.
3. Genre and Hybridity |
Genre is a category of media products sharing a repertoire of elements: typical settings, iconography, narrative patterns, character types, and stylistic conventions. Genres offer audiences familiar pleasures and help producers target markets.
Steve Neale argues that genre relies on repetition and difference. Audiences expect certain conventions to be repeated, but they also crave variation and novelty within the familiar framework.
Hybridity occurs when two or more genres are blended, such as a romantic comedy or sci-fi horror. This fusion can attract wider audiences and generate fresh meanings.
Sub-genre is a more specific category within a larger genre, for example ‘slasher’ within horror. It possesses its own tighter conventions.
Iconography means the visual signs and symbols associated with a genre: a cowboy hat signals a Western, neon lights often signify noir or cyberpunk.
4. Representation and Stereotypes |
Representation is the way media re-presents reality through a process of selection (choosing what to include), mediation (the act of shaping the material) and construction (the final produced image). Every representation is a version of reality, never a pure reflection.
Stereotypes are simplified, often exaggerated representations of social groups, used by media as a shorthand. While they can help audiences quickly recognise types, they risk reinforcing prejudice.
Countertypes deliberately challenge dominant stereotypes by presenting a group in a positive or more complex light, questioning taken-for-granted assumptions.
Stuart Hall’s representation theory stresses that meaning is constructed through language and that stereotyping reduces people to a few fixed traits, often to uphold power differences.
Ideology is a system of beliefs and values presented as natural or common sense. Media texts often promote a dominant ideology, such as consumerism or patriarchy, which can be accepted, negotiated or rejected by audiences.
5. Audience – Demographics and Psychographics |
Demographics classify audiences by measurable characteristics such as age, gender, income, occupation, and social grade (A–E). This data helps producers schedule and advertise.
Psychographics (Young & Rubicam’s 4Cs) group people according to their values, attitudes, and lifestyles: Mainstreamers, Aspirers, Succeeders, Reformers, etc. This reveals deeper motivations behind media consumption.
Target audience is the specific group a media product aims to reach. A secondary audience also engages but is not the primary focus; for example, a children’s film’s secondary audience might be parents.
Niche audience is a small, specialised group with distinct interests, while mass audience is broad and heterogeneous. Niche media can foster strong loyalty but yields smaller numbers.
6. Audience – Reception and Effects |
The hypodermic needle model (or magic bullet theory) suggests media injects ideas directly into a passive audience, causing immediate and uniform effects. It is now largely dismissed as oversimplified.
The uses and gratifications model views audiences as active users who select media to meet specific needs: information, personal identity, integration and social interaction, and entertainment.
Stuart Hall’s reception theory outlines three reading positions: the preferred reading (audience accepts the intended meaning), negotiated reading (partly accepts, partly adapts), and oppositional reading (rejects the preferred meaning in favour of an alternative).
The two-step flow model argues that media messages reach opinion leaders first, who then interpret and pass them to less active associates. This highlights the role of personal influence.
A moral panic (Stanley Cohen) occurs when a group or phenomenon is defined as a threat to societal values, amplified by media coverage, leading to disproportionate public concern and calls for control.
7. Media Industry – Ownership and Integration |
Conglomerate is a large corporation that owns numerous smaller companies across diverse industries. Disney is a media conglomerate with film studios, TV networks, theme parks, and publishing arms.
Vertical integration means a company controls multiple stages of production, distribution, and exhibition. For example, a studio that produces a film, distributes it via its own outlets, and screens it in its own cinemas.
Horizontal integration occurs when a company acquires businesses at the same level of the supply chain, such as a newspaper group buying another newspaper title to widen its market share.
Synergy is the coordinated promotion of a media product across multiple subsidiaries of a conglomerate. A film release may be accompanied by a soundtrack album, video game, toys and theme park ride, each boosting the others.
Convergence refers to the merging of previously separate platforms and technologies. A smartphone exemplifies technological convergence; media companies also practise corporate convergence when they partner across sectors.
8. Media Industry – Regulation and Public Service |
Ofcom is the UK’s communications regulator, overseeing television, radio, telecoms and postal services. It enforces standards around harm, offence, accuracy and impartiality, and can fine or revoke licences.
The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) classifies films and video content by age ratings (U, PG, 12A, 15, 18) based on guidelines addressing themes, violence, language, sex and drug use.
IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organisation) regulates most of the UK’s newspapers and magazines, handling complaints about accuracy, privacy, and intrusion, though its powers are less punitive than Ofcom’s.
Public service broadcasting (PSB) requires broadcasters like the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 to provide content that informs, educates, and entertains, serving the public interest rather than purely commercial goals.
Deregulation involves reducing government rules to encourage competition, but it may lower quality or diversity. The debate over balance between freedom and protection is central to media regulation.
9. New Media and Digital Convergence |
Web 2.0 describes the shift from static web pages to interactive, user-generated content platforms such as YouTube, social networks, and wikis. Audiences become producers, often called prosumers.
Participatory culture (Henry Jenkins) is a culture where fans and consumers are invited to actively create and share content, blurring the line between producer and audience.
