1. Pitch and Note Names |

Pitches are named using the first seven letters of the alphabet (A–G) and can be altered by accidentals. The chromatic scale consists of twelve equally spaced semitones per octave. Each letter name may be raised by a sharp (♯), lowered by a flat (♭), or cancelled by a natural (♮). Enharmonic equivalents, such as C♯ and D♭, sound the same but are spelled differently depending on musical context.

Middle C is notated as C4 in Scientific Pitch Notation. The octave number changes at every C; the note immediately below middle C is B3. Understanding precise pitch location is crucial when transposing instruments are involved.

2. Intervals | 音程

An interval measures the distance between two pitches. Always count the lower note as ‘1’. The general size is determined by the letter name count (2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.), then refined with quality: major (M), minor (m), perfect (P), augmented (A), or diminished (d). Unisons, 4ths, 5ths, and octaves are perfect; 2nds, 3rds, 6ths, and 7ths are major or minor.

How to identify: count staff lines and spaces (including both notes), then consider semitones. For example, C to E is a 3rd (three letter names) with 4 semitones, thus a major 3rd. C to E♭ is a minor 3rd (3 semitones). A perfect 5th spans 7 semitones; C to G is perfect. If C to G♭, the semitone count is 6 — a diminished 5th (d5). Augmented intervals are one semitone wider than perfect or major; diminished intervals one semitone smaller than perfect or minor.

Inversion rule: Major ↔ minor, Augmented ↔ diminished, Perfect ↔ perfect. The sum of interval numbers before and after inversion is always 9. For instance, a major 3rd (C–E) inverts to a minor 6th (E–C).

3. Scale Formulas |

Scales are built from fixed patterns of tones (T) and semitones (S). The major scale formula: T–T–S–T–T–T–S. For example, C major: C – T – D – T – E – S – F – T – G – T – A – T – B – S – C.

例如C大调:C–T–D–T–E–S–F–T–G–T–A–T–B–S–C。

Natural minor scale formula: T–S–T–T–S–T–T. Harmonic minor raises the 7th degree, creating an augmented 2nd between 6 and 7. Melodic minor raises the 6th and 7th ascending, and reverts to natural minor descending. The whole-tone scale uses T only; chromatic scale uses all S.

The blues scale: 1, ♭3, 4, ♯4 (or ♭5), 5, ♭7. Pentatonic major: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6. Pentatonic minor: 1, ♭3, 4, 5, ♭7. These are the building blocks for endless melodies and improvisation.

4. Chord Construction |

Chords are built by stacking thirds on a root. A triad consists of root, 3rd, and 5th. The formula for a major triad: root + M3 + P5. Minor triad: root + m3 + P5. Diminished: root + m3 + d5. Augmented: root + M3 + A5.

Seventh chords add a 7th. Dominant 7th: major triad + m7 (e.g., G–B–D–F). Major 7th: major triad + M7 (C–E–G–B). Minor 7th: minor triad + m7 (D–F–A–C). Half-diminished 7th: diminished triad + m7 (B–D–F–A). Fully diminished 7th: diminished triad + d7 (B–D–F–A♭).

属七和弦:大三和弦 + m7(如G–B–D–F)。大七和弦:大三和弦 + M7(C–E–G–B)。小七和弦:小三和弦 + m7(D–F–A–C)。半减七和弦:减三和弦 + m7(B–D–F–A)。完全减七和弦:减三和弦 + d7(B–D–F–A♭)。

Roman numerals indicate chord function within a key, using upper case for major, lower case for minor, and ° for diminished. In C major: I (C), ii (Dm), iii (Em), IV (F), V (G), vi (Am), vii° (Bdim).

C大调中:I(C), ii(Dm), iii(Em), IV(F), V(G), vi(Am), vii°(Bdim)。

5. Harmonic Functions and Progressions |

The three primary harmonic functions are tonic (T), predominant (PD), and dominant (D). In major keys, I is tonic; IV and ii are predominant; V and vii° are dominant. The most fundamental progression is I–IV–V–I, creating a complete harmonic cycle: rest–departure–tension–resolution.

The circle-of-fifths progression moves by descending perfect 5ths (or ascending 4ths): iii – vi – ii – V – I. This chain provides strong root movement. Avoid parallel fifths and octaves in part-writing; contrary motion is preferred.

Cadential 6/4 (I⁶⁄₄) is frequently used before V. It is a second-inversion tonic chord that functions as a double suspension over the dominant bass, resolving to V. For example, in C major: G–C–E (I⁶⁄₄) moving to G–B–D (V). Always resolve the 6th down to 5th and the 4th down to 3rd.

6. Four-Part Harmony Rules |

In chorale-style writing, combine SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) following strict conventions to maintain independence and smooth voice-leading. Spacing: no more than an octave between adjacent upper voices (alto–tenor can exceed an octave if necessary). Cover the full chord: include root, 3rd, and 5th; the 5th may be omitted if the root is doubled.

Doubling: double the root in root-position triads; double the soprano note in first inversion; double the bass note in second inversion. Never double the leading tone (7th degree of the scale) as it creates parallel octaves when resolving. Avoid cross relations, and resolve seventh chords appropriately.

7. Cadences | 终止式

Cadences are musical punctuation marks that articulate phrases. The four principal types:

  • Perfect (V–I): both chords in root position, soprano ends on tonic. Full close.
  • Imperfect (I–V, ii–V, etc.): ends on V; sounds incomplete.
  • Plagal (IV–I): ‘Amen’ cadence.
  • Interrupted (V–vi): deceptive; the expected I is replaced by vi.

In CIE analysis, be able to identify these by Roman numeral and voice-leading characteristics. The perfect cadence is the strongest and most commonly used to end pieces.

8. Melodic Ornamentation |

Ornaments are embellishments that add expressive detail. Common ornaments in Baroque and Classical styles include: trill (rapid alternation between principal note and upper auxiliary), mordent (single rapid alternation with upper or lower neighbour), turn (four-note figure: upper–principal–lower–principal), appoggiatura (leaning note that takes half the main note’s value, on the beat), and acciaccatura (crushed grace note, played very quickly before the beat in Classical period).

Ornaments should be interpreted according to period performance practice. In Baroque music, a trill generally begins on the upper auxiliary; after 1800, the trill often starts on the principal note. Always check the context and treatises (e.g., C.P.E. Bach) for exact execution.

9. Rhythm and Meter |

Meter is the regular grouping of beats. Simple time: each beat divides into two equal parts (2/4, 3/4, 4/4). Compound time: each beat divides into three equal parts (6/8, 9/8, 12/8). The top number indicates beats per measure; bottom number indicates beat value. In 6/8 there are two dotted-quarter-note beats per bar.

Rhythmic devices include syncopation (accent on a normally weak beat or off-beat), hemiola (shift of metric accent, e.g., three groups of two against two groups of three), and cross-rhythm. Triplets (3 notes in space of 2) and duplets (2 notes in space of 3) allow division across the expected beat.

10. Musical Forms |

Form is the blueprint of a composition. Binary (AB) consists of two roughly equal sections, each usually repeated. Ternary (ABA) has a contrasting middle section and a return of the opening material. Rondo (ABACA, ABACABA) features a recurring principal theme alternating with episodes. Sonata form (exposition–development–recapitulation) is the most significant structure in the Classical period, built on tonal conflict between primary (tonic) and secondary (dominant or relative major) key areas, resolved in the recapitulation where the secondary theme returns in the tonic.

In Year 12 analysis, be prepared to identify phrase structures: period (antecedent–consequent), sentence (presentation–continuation). Minuet and trio form (often ternary with each section binary) and theme and variations are also essential.

11. Notation and Clefs |

The treble clef (middle C on a ledger line below staff) is standard for high instruments. The bass clef (middle C on a ledger line above) for low registers. The alto clef (middle C on the middle line) is used for viola. Tenor clef (middle C on the fourth line) appears for upper range of cello, bassoon, and trombone.

Accidentals apply to the pitch they precede and all further occurrences of that pitch within the bar, unless cancelled. Key signatures indicate the prevailing key, raising or lowering specific notes throughout the piece. Transposing instruments (e.g., clarinet in B♭, horn in F) sound a different pitch than written — an essential formula when reading scores.
