The formula for simple time is straightforward: the beat note is the denominator as a power of 2 (e.g., 4 = crotchet, 8 = quaver). In compound time, each beat is a dotted note: the top number divided by 3 gives the number of dotted beats, while the denominator indicates the undotted note value that makes up the dotted beat.
