1. Welcome to OCR A Level PE | 欢迎学习 OCR A Level 体育
The OCR A Level Physical Education course is a rigorous yet rewarding qualification that blends scientific theory with practical performance. Over two years you will explore how the body and mind function during sport, how society shapes physical activity, and how you can evaluate and improve your own performance as a coach or athlete. This course demands curiosity, independent reading, and the ability to apply concepts to real sporting examples.
OCR A Level
Your transition from GCSE to A Level is significant. You will move from describing simple human biology and basic skill types to analysing energy systems, psychological interventions, and social inequalities in sport. The summer bridging course ensures you start this journey with confidence, armed with the right vocabulary and conceptual understanding.
2. Understanding the Specification |
OCR A Level PE (H555) is examined through three written papers and one non-exam assessment (NEA). The theoretical components are: Component 01 – Physiological factors affecting performance (90 marks, 30%), Component 02 – Psychological factors affecting performance (60 marks, 20%), and Component 03 – Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport (60 marks, 20%). The remaining 30% comes from your practical performance (NEA), which includes one competitive activity and an Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for Improvement (EAPI) task.
The bridging course will touch on all three theoretical areas, but your main focus this summer should be on refreshing GCSE knowledge in human biology and beginning to think like a social scientist. Familiarising yourself with the language of the specification is a powerful first step – start reading the command words like ‘analyse’, ‘evaluate’ and ‘justify’ as they will appear constantly in your lessons.
3. Component 01: Physiological Factors Affecting Performance |
This is the largest and most science-heavy component of the course. It covers three major topics: Applied Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise Physiology, and Biomechanics. You will study the skeletal and muscular systems in fine detail, learning how muscle fibres contract, how the cardiovascular and respiratory systems respond to exercise, and how energy is provided through the ATP-PC system, glycolytic system, and aerobic system.
Key concepts such as oxygen dissociation, cardiac output (Q = stroke volume × heart rate), and VO₂ max will all be explored. In biomechanics, you will apply Newton’s laws, analyse lever systems, and understand the impact of forces on sporting movement. A strong command of biology from GCSE will be extremely helpful here, so the summer tasks will reinforce your understanding of the heart, lungs, and muscle names.
4. Component 02: Psychological Factors Affecting Performance |
This component introduces you to skill acquisition and sport psychology. In skill acquisition, you will examine how performers learn and refine skills, looking at theories of learning, memory models, and feedback. You will classify skills using continua such as open–closed, gross–fine, and self-paced–externally paced. The psychological section explores personality, attitudes, arousal, anxiety, aggression, and motivation, all through the lens of sporting behaviour.
A key area to explore over the summer is the relationship between arousal and performance – the inverted-U theory and the catastrophe model will feature heavily. You will also study the role of goal setting, confidence (self-efficacy) and leadership in sport. Begin to observe how psychological concepts play out in real matches or training sessions; this habit will sharpen your ability to apply theory to practice.
5. Component 03: Socio-cultural Issues in Physical Activity and Sport |
This component moves away from pure science and asks you to think about sport’s role in society. You will study the emergence and evolution of modern sport, from the industrial revolution to today’s global sporting events. Topics include the impact of class, gender, and ethnicity on participation, the role of UK Sport, Sport England, and National Governing Bodies, as well as commercialisation, media, and sponsorship.
You will also analyse contemporary issues such as drugs in sport, match-fixing, and the use of technology. Ethics and deviance are recurring themes. A good summer exercise is to start collecting news articles on sports stories and categorising them under ‘socio-cultural factors’. This will build a bank of examples that will be invaluable for higher-mark essay questions.
6. The Practical Performance (NEA) |
The non-exam assessment accounts for 30% of your final grade and has two parts: a practical performance in one chosen activity (15%) and the Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for Improvement (EAPI, 15%) . For the practical, you must be assessed in a fully competitive context – this could be your sport of choice, such as football, netball, swimming, or dance. Your school will film evidence of your performance.
The EAPI is an oral assessment where you evaluate a live performance, identifying strengths and weaknesses and proposing a development plan. Over the summer, consider which sport you will focus on, start filming yourself, and practise analysing tactical and technical elements. Keep a training diary – this will serve as excellent raw material for your coursework.
7. Key Skills for Success: Data Analysis & Evaluation |
At A Level, simply recalling facts is not enough; you must interpret data and build reasoned arguments. All written papers contain data-response questions where you might analyse graphs of heart rate during exercise, tables of participation rates, or psychology inventories. Learn to identify trends, calculate percentage changes, and comment on validity and reliability.
Evaluation skills are particularly prized. In your bridging tasks, practise using phrases like ‘this suggests that…’, ‘however, a limitation is…’, and ‘the practical implications are…’. This will prepare you for the 20-mark extended responses in Components 01 and 03, where high-level analysis and evaluation separate the top candidates.
8. Summer Bridging Task 1: Anatomy & Physiology Refresher |
Task: Create a set of revision flashcards covering the major bones, muscles, and joints from your GCSE studies. For each bone, note its type (long, short, flat, irregular) and an example of movement where it plays a role. For muscles, list their antagonistic pairs and the joint actions they produce. Finally, sketch and label a simple diagram of the heart showing the path of blood flow, and explain the terms stroke volume, cardiac output, and heart rate.
Extension: Research the equation Q = SV × HR and apply it to resting and exercising values. Then, watch a short video on the conduction system of the heart and summarise the pathway in 200 words. These tasks directly underpin the early topics in Component 01 and will give you a substantial head start.
9. Summer Bridging Task 2: Skill Acquisition Introduction |
Task: Choose three sports skills – one that is highly closed and self-paced (e.g., a golf putt), one that is open and externally paced (e.g., a goalkeeper save in hockey), and one that blends both (e.g., a tennis serve). Record a short video of each or find clips online. Write a paragraph for each skill classifying it on the following continua: open–closed, gross–fine, discrete–serial–continuous. Justify your decisions.
Further reading: Find a definition of ‘motor programme’ and try to explain how a tennis serve might be executed automatically by an expert. This will introduce you to cognitive theories that you will study in depth during the first term. The more connections you make now, the easier the content will feel.
10. Summer Bridging Task 3: Sport Psychology Scenarios |
Task: Read two short case studies of athletes experiencing anxiety before a major competition (e.g., a penalty kick in football or a gymnast’s final routine). For each, identify physical, cognitive, and behavioural signs of anxiety. Then, suggest one strategy to manage the anxiety, such as deep breathing, positive self-talk, or imagery. Link your suggestions to the concepts of competitive trait anxiety and state anxiety.
Reflective note: Think about your own experiences in sport. Can you remember a time when you felt under pressure? Write a brief reflection about how your performance changed and what you might do differently in future. This personal connection will make the psychology theories much more memorable.
11. Study Strategies & Resources |
Success in OCR PE requires active, consistent revision rather than last-minute cramming. Start building an organised folder divided by specification topic. Use the recommended textbook: ‘OCR A Level PE Book 1’ by John Honeybourne and Sarah Powell. Supplement your reading with PEfocus, The EverLearner, and the official OCR website for past papers and examiner reports.
使用推荐教材:John Honeybourne 和 Sarah Powell 合著的《OCR A Level PE Book 1》。
Create a glossary of key terms as you work through the bridging tasks. Define words like ‘eversion’, ‘antagonist’, ‘aerobic capacity’, and ‘social stratification’. Use online quizzes to test yourself weekly. Remember, the subject rewards breadth of example as well as depth – watching live sport and documentaries can be just as valuable as textbook reading.
12. Looking Ahead: Year 12 Curriculum Map | 展望:Year 12 课程地图
In the autumn term, you will typically begin with Component 01, focusing on the skeletal and muscular systems, followed by the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Component 02 often starts with skill classification and the learning theories of operant conditioning, observational learning, and cognitive theory. Component 03 may be introduced later in the year, looking at pre-industrial sport and popular recreation.
Use this summer to ease into the workload. Complete the bridging tasks, read a sports biography, and keep active in your chosen practical sport. When you step into your first lesson, you will already understand the course structure, key concepts, and how to think like an A Level PE student. Good luck!
