1. Epistemology: What Can We Know?
Epistemology examines the nature, scope, and limits of knowledge. The traditional tripartite definition, traceable to Plato, holds that knowledge is justified true belief (JTB): S knows that P if and only if P is true, S believes that P, and S is justified in believing that P.
However, Edmund Gettier’s 1963 counterexamples challenged the sufficiency of JTB. In his scenarios, an agent has a justified true belief based on faulty reasoning or luck, yet intuitively lacks knowledge. For instance, Smith sees ten coins in Jones’s pocket and concludes ‘the man who will get the job has ten coins’; unbeknownst to Smith, he himself gets the job and coincidentally has ten coins. This sparked debates on whether a fourth condition (e.g., no false lemmas) is needed.
Regarding the source of knowledge, rationalists (e.g., Descartes, Leibniz) argue that reason alone can yield certain knowledge, often appealing to innate ideas. Empiricists (Locke, Hume) maintain that all knowledge originates from sense experience; the mind begins as a tabula rasa. Both positions face challenges: rationalists must explain how a priori reasoning applies to the world, while empiricists must account for abstract concepts like mathematics.
Global scepticism, exemplified by Descartes’ evil demon hypothesis, questions whether any of our beliefs can be justified. Descartes employs methodological doubt to seek an indubitable foundation (the cogito). Contemporary responses include foundationalism, coherentism, and reliabilism; each attempts to show that some or all of our beliefs remain justified despite sceptical threats.
2. Persons and Personal Identity |
Personal identity concerns what it is to be a ‘person’ across time. The bodily continuity criterion claims that persistence is grounded in the physical continuity of the organism. If your body survives, you survive. Thought experiments involving body swaps or fission challenge this view: if your brain is transplanted into a new body, many would judge that the person survives with the brain, not the original body.
John Locke proposed that personal identity consists in psychological continuity, primarily memory. For Locke, if you remember a past thought or action, you are the same person who had that thought. However, Thomas Reid objected that identity must be transitive, but memory is not always transitive (the ‘brave officer’ paradox). Moreover, cases of amnesia or total memory loss raise questions: does the person cease to exist? Modern psychological theories incorporate direct psychological connections, not just memory.
The soul theory identifies the person with an immaterial substance. This view, associated with Descartes and many religious traditions, avoids bodily and psychological puzzles but faces acute epistemic and metaphysical difficulties: how can we individuate souls, and how can a soul interact with a changing brain? Given the diversity of theories, the AS course expects you to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each approach.
3. Mind and Body |
The mind–body problem explores the relation between mental states (beliefs, pains) and physical states (brain processes). Descartes’ substance dualism asserts that mind and body are two distinct substances: mind is non-extended and thinking, body is extended and non-thinking. The main challenge is the interaction problem: if the two substances are entirely different, how can they causally affect each other? Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia famously raised this objection.
