Welcome to your Year 13 WJEC Psychology summer bridging programme. This resource is designed to help you transition smoothly from AS to A2 by consolidating essential knowledge, previewing the demands of Units 3 and 4, and building the independent study habits that will drive your success. Use it as a structured guide throughout the summer to arrive in September feeling confident, prepared, and genuinely curious about the psychological world.

1. Welcome and Course Overview |

This bridging programme is not just a revision pack; it is a carefully sequenced pathway from the familiar territory of AS into the more complex landscape of A2. You will revisit the approaches, debates and research methods that underpin the whole qualification, while also getting a meaningful first look at the topics that will define your final year. By the end of the summer, you should feel that you have built a sturdy bridge between what you have already achieved and what is still to come.

WJEC A Level Psychology is assessed through four units. You have already completed Unit 1 (Psychology: Past to Present) and Unit 2 (Psychology: Using Psychological Concepts). This summer, your focus is on preparing for the two A2 units: Unit 3 (Psychology: Implications in the Real World) and Unit 4 (Psychology: Applied Research Methods). Together they are worth 60 % of your full A Level, so the work you do now will have a direct impact on your final grade.

2. The AS to A2 Transition: What Changes?

Many students underestimate the step up from AS to A2, believing it is simply more of the same. In reality, the demands shift considerably. At AS you were largely asked to describe and explain psychological theories and studies. At A2 you are required to evaluate, apply and synthesise. The command words change from ‘outline’ and ‘describe’ to ‘discuss’, ‘evaluate’, ‘compare’ and ‘apply’. This means you must move beyond seeing material as isolated facts and begin to see it as a web of interconnected ideas that can be used to make sense of real-world issues.

Additionally, Unit 3 introduces compulsory Controversies – cultural bias, ethical costs, non-human animals, scientific status and gender bias – which require you to think critically about the discipline itself. This is often the aspect that students find most challenging, because it asks you to stand back and question the very foundations of the psychology you have learned. Starting to engage with these debates over the summer, even at a surface level, will give you a significant advantage.

3. Unit 3: Psychology in the Real World – An Overview | Unit 3:

Unit 3 is titled ‘Psychology: Implications in the Real World’ and is divided into two sections. Section A is the compulsory study of five Controversies. You will need to be able to explain each one, apply them to novel psychological scenarios, and discuss them with reference to evidence and competing arguments. This is not a memory test: it is a test of your ability to think like a psychologist about the limitations and responsibilities of your subject.

Section B requires you to study two applied options, chosen by your centre, from a list that includes Addictive Behaviours, Autistic Spectrum Behaviours, Bullying Behaviours, Criminal Behaviours, Schizophrenia and Stress. Each applied option involves understanding the characteristics of the behaviour or condition, the biological, individual differences and social psychological explanations, and the methods of modifying or treating it. The best preparation you can do now is to read widely and start to form opinions about how psychological theory translates into practice in areas that genuinely interest you.

4. Unit 4: Applied Research Methods – What to Expect | Unit 4:

Unit 4 is not simply an extension of the research methods you learned at AS; it is a sustained exercise in designing, analysing and evaluating psychological research. You will be expected to design a study from a given scenario, justify every methodological decision, choose appropriate inferential statistics, calculate them, and interpret the results. The paper includes novel scenarios, so you must understand the principles behind the methods rather than relying on rote-learned templates.

Key statistical tests you will need to master include the Sign Test (from AS), Chi-square for association or goodness of fit, Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, Spearman’s rho, and related parametric tests where appropriate. You must also understand levels of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval/ratio), the logic of null hypothesis significance testing, Type I and Type II errors, and the use of critical values tables. The summer is an ideal time to revisit these fundamentals and ensure they feel fluent and familiar.

5. Core AS Concepts You Must Master | 必须掌握的 AS 核心概念

No bridge stands without strong foundations. Before you can tackle the demands of A2, you need to be completely secure in the five psychological approaches that run through the entire WJEC specification: Biological, Psychodynamic, Behaviourist, Cognitive and Positive. For each approach, you should be able to articulate its key assumptions, how it explains behaviour and its related therapy or application. You must also be able to compare and contrast the approaches effectively, as this skill underpins many high-mark questions.

A particularly productive exercise is to take a behaviour, such as anxiety or aggression, and explain it from each of the five approaches. Then practice writing a comparative paragraph that weighs up which approach offers the most useful explanation and why. This not only consolidates your AS knowledge but also mirrors the synoptic style required in Unit 3 Controversies and Unit 4 evaluations.

6. Preview of Key A2 Topics: Schizophrenia, Criminal Behaviour and Stress | 关键 A2 主题预览:精神分裂症、犯罪行为与压力

While your school may choose different applied options, three of the most commonly taught are Schizophrenia, Criminal Behaviour and Stress. Familiarising yourself with the basics of each over the summer will lighten your cognitive load in September. For each topic, begin by building a simple map: characteristics, biological explanations, individual differences explanations, social psychological explanations, and methods of modification or management. This structure mirrors the subtopics you will study in depth.

For Schizophrenia, pay attention to the distinction between positive and negative symptoms, the dopamine hypothesis and its revisions, and the role of family dynamics such as expressed emotion. For Criminal Behaviour, consider the biological explanations (e.g. amygdala dysfunction, genetics) alongside social learning theory and cognitive distortions like hostile attribution bias. For Stress, grasp the GAS model, the role of life events and daily hassles, and the difference between problem-focused and emotion-focused coping. You do not need detailed notes yet, but understanding the outline of each story will help new information stick.

7. Assessment Objectives and Exam Technique for A2 | A2 评估目标与考试技巧

WJEC psychology uses three assessment objectives: AO1 (knowledge and understanding), AO2 (application) and AO3 (evaluation and analysis). At A2, the balance shifts: AO3 carries more weight than at AS, and you will be rewarded for constructing well-reasoned, evidence-based arguments rather than simply listing strengths and limitations. A good evaluation is not a shopping list; it is a coherent discussion that weighs up the evidence and arrives at a justified conclusion.

WJEC 心理学使用三个评估目标:AO1(知识与理解)、AO2(应用)和 AO3(评价与分析)。

Start practising the language of evaluation: phrases such as ‘However, this research is limited by…’, ‘A strength of this explanation is that it has practical applications such as…’, and ‘In contrast, the biological approach would argue that…’. Also, get comfortable with the structure of a good A2 essay: a focused opening paragraph, a series of thematic paragraphs that mix AO1 and AO3, and a brief conclusion. Use past paper questions from the WJEC website to guide your practice, even if you cannot yet answer them fully.

8. Research Methods and Statistics: Beyond Descriptive Statistics |

At AS you became comfortable with measures of central tendency and dispersion, and with the Sign Test. At A2 you must be able to select and justify the use of a range of inferential statistics. This involves a clear decision-making process: identify the level of measurement, determine whether the data are from an independent groups or repeated measures design, and whether you are testing for a difference or a correlation. Only then can you confidently choose the correct test.

This summer, create a decision flowchart and practise with simple data sets. For example, if you have ordinal data from an independent groups design testing for a difference, you would choose the Mann-Whitney U test. The formula is rarely asked for directly, but you must be able to calculate the test statistic, find the critical value from a table, and state whether the result is significant. Understand the convention that p ≤ 0.05 is the standard significance level, and be able to write a conclusion that refers back to the null hypothesis. Use notation: e.g. U = 17, critical value = 13, p < 0.05, reject null hypothesis.

Also revise the Chi-square test. For a goodness of fit test, you may need to use the formula:

χ² = Σ (O − E)² / E

where O is the observed frequency and E is the expected frequency. An ability to calculate this accurately and interpret the degrees of freedom (df = number of categories − 1) will be essential.

9. Developing Independent Study Skills |

Year 13 moves at a fast pace, and your teacher will not be able to spoon-feed you every piece of content. You must begin to take ownership of your learning. This means reading beyond the textbook, making your own revision resources, and actively seeking out psychological research in the news. The habit of maintaining a ‘Psychology in the News’ diary over the summer is an excellent way to develop synoptic links and gather material for evaluation paragraphs.

You should also practise retrieving information from memory rather than simply re-reading notes. Use blank page retrieval: at the end of a study session, close your book and write down everything you can remember from the Approaches or a method you revised. Then check against your notes and fill the gaps. This technique, grounded in cognitive psychology, dramatically improves long-term retention and will make your September recall remarkably sharp.

10. Summer Learning Plan and Resources |

A structured plan will prevent the summer from slipping away. Aim for four focused sessions per week, each lasting about 45 to 60 minutes. Assign each session a clear theme: one week revisit the Biological and Behaviourist approaches, another week design and evaluate a hypothetical study for a scenario similar to those in Unit 4. Mix content revision with skills practice to keep your brain engaged.

Use the following resources: the official WJEC specification and past papers (free online), the course textbook endorsed by WJEC, and reputable online platforms such as TutorHao where you can find targeted revision materials. Do not try to learn every A2 topic in depth over the summer – that is your teacher’s job. Your job is to build readiness, curiosity and a solid base of AS knowledge that can support the new learning to come.

Finally, remember to rest. Psychology is about understanding human experience, including your own. A burnt-out brain learns nothing well. Balance your academic preparation with activities that genuinely restore you, and arrive in Year 13 with energy, perspective and a genuine appetite for the fascinating year ahead.
