📚 GCSE OCR Geography: Case Study Practice Drill | GCSE OCR

Case studies are the cornerstone of the OCR GCSE Geography exam. You are expected to learn a range of real-world examples that illustrate the theories and processes covered in each topic. The exam questions will test not just your factual recall, but also your ability to apply those facts to analyse, evaluate, and compare. This article is a practical drill designed to sharpen your case study skills. You will learn how to structure answers, avoid common pitfalls, and use specific details effectively. By practicing the approaches outlined here, you can boost your confidence and your marks.

1. Understanding the Role of Case Studies in OCR Exams | 理解案例研究在OCR考试中的作用

The OCR Geography specification requires you to have a detailed knowledge of at least one case study per theme. These case studies are your evidence for geographical concepts. For example, when answering a question on coastal processes, you need to refer to a specific stretch of coastline and what happens there. Generic answers without a named place and specific data will not score high marks. Examiners want to see that you can ‘think like a geographer’ by connecting general theory to a unique context.

Your case study bank should include examples for natural hazards, climatic change, ecosystems, river and coastal landscapes, as well as urban change, development dynamics, and resource management. Each one must be learned systematically, covering location, causes, effects, and management or responses. This four‑part framework will help you tackle any case study question with structure and precision.

2. Selecting and Organising Your Case Studies |

It is essential to curate a manageable set of case studies. For each topic, pick one or two strong examples that allow you to discuss all the required aspects. For ‘UK in the 21st Century’ you might use London; for ‘Ecosystems of the Planet’, the Amazon rainforest or a named local pond. Avoid spreading your revision too thinly over many examples. Depth is more important than breadth in case study questions.

One of the most effective revision techniques is to create a one‑page summary for each case study. Include a quick sketch map to locate the place, bullet points of key statistics, a timeline of events, and a PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) paragraph for each part. By condensing the information, you train your memory to recall the most salient details under exam conditions. Regular testing using these summaries is far more productive than repeatedly reading textbooks.

3. The Four‑Part Answer Structure |

Whenever you are asked to ‘explain’, ‘assess’, or ‘evaluate’ a case study, follow this logical sequence: 1) Location – state exactly where the case study is and mention one or two unique place characteristics. 2) Causes – describe the natural and/or human factors that led to the issue. 3) Effects – outline the social, economic and environmental consequences. 4) Management/Responses – explain what was done to address the issue and how successful it has been.

This structure ensures your answer is coherent and hits all the assessment objectives (AO1 knowledge, AO2 application, AO3 evaluation). For example, in a 6‑mark question on a flood event, you could allocate about 1 mark for location and context, 2 marks for causes, 2 marks for effects, and 1 mark for management or a concluding evaluation. Practising this structure repeatedly will make it second nature in the exam hall.

4. Physical Geography Drill: Holderness Coast Erosion |

Let’s apply the structure to a classic case study. The Holderness Coast in East Yorkshire, England, is one of Europe’s fastest-eroding coastlines. Practice question: ‘Explain the causes and effects of coastal erosion along the Holderness Coast (6 marks).’ A strong answer begins: ‘The Holderness Coast stretches 61 km from Flamborough Head to Spurn Head. The cliffs are made of soft boulder clay, which erodes at an average rate of about 2 metres per year.’ This immediately shows locational knowledge.

For causes, you could write: ‘The dominant north‑easterly winds generate powerful destructive waves that attack the base of the cliffs. Longshore drift then carries the eroded material southwards, starving the beaches of sediment. Human intervention, such as the groynes built at Mappleton in 1991, has protected that village but starved the downdrift beaches, accelerating erosion at places like Great Cowden.’ This blends physical and human causes.

For effects, mention that over 30 villages have been lost since Roman times. Social effects include mental stress and the loss of homes; economic effects include the loss of high‑grade agricultural land and declining tourism; environmental effects include the destruction of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) such as the Lagoons at Spurn Point. A balanced answer might then evaluate that the economic cost of protecting the entire coast is unjustifiable, leading to a policy of managed retreat in some areas.

The Boscastle flood of 16 August 2004 is a superb example for river flooding. To answer, ‘Describe the causes and management of the Boscastle flood event (6 marks),’ begin with location: Boscastle is a small village in north Cornwall, at the confluence of three rivers in a steep-sided, narrow valley. On that day, 200 mm of rain fell in 24 hours, the majority in just a few hours, on ground already saturated from previous wet weather.

The steep slopes and impermeable shale in the upper catchment caused rapid surface runoff, channelling water into the river very quickly. The narrow village acted as a bottleneck, and the small bridge across the main road trapped debris, creating a dam that later burst. The flood damaged over 100 buildings and cars, and caused around £20 million in damage, though miraculously no lives were lost. Management since then has included a £10 million scheme finished in 2008, widening and deepening the river channel, creating a flood relief culvert, and raising car park levels to act as flood storage.

To evaluate, you could argue that the scheme has successfully protected Boscastle from subsequent events, but it was extremely expensive and environmentally intrusive, and might encourage future development in the flood‑plain. Always show both sides of an argument when asked to ‘assess’ or ‘evaluate’.
