AS WJEC Philosophy: Essay Writing Framework and Model Essays | AS WJEC

📚 AS WJEC Philosophy: Essay Writing Framework and Model Essays | AS WJEC

Mastering the AS WJEC Philosophy essay is not about memorising long paragraphs of textbook material. It is about demonstrating a clear understanding of philosophical arguments and, crucially, evaluating them with precision. This guide breaks down the essential essay-writing framework, from understanding the mark scheme to crafting high-level conclusions, and provides two full model essays with commentary to illustrate what examiners are looking for.

1. Understanding the Mark Scheme |

In WJEC AS Philosophy, essays are assessed against two Assessment Objectives: AO1 and AO2. AO1 covers your ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of philosophical concepts, arguments and terminology. AO2 covers your ability to analyse and evaluate these ideas, constructing well-supported critical judgements. Typically, marks are split roughly equally between AO1 and AO2, so simply describing a theory will never earn you top grades.

Assessment Objective What Examiners Want
AO1 Accurate, relevant and well-explained knowledge. Use of key terms, scholarly views and clear exposition of arguments.
AO2 Critical analysis, evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, engagement with counterarguments and a justified conclusion.

Every paragraph you write should blend AO1 and AO2. Avoid front-loading all description and leaving evaluation to the very end. Instead, weave evaluation throughout your response, immediately questioning the success or limitations of the arguments you introduce.

2. The Overall Structure of an Essay |

A well-structured WJEC philosophy essay follows a clear, logical flow: a focused introduction, a series of analytical body paragraphs and a compelling conclusion. Think of your essay as a guided journey for the examiner. The introduction tells them where you are going, each body paragraph develops a step of the argument, and the conclusion brings everything together and answers the question decisively.

A typical AS essay of around 25-30 marks will require 4-6 substantial body paragraphs. Avoid over-long paragraphs; each should explore one clear point. Use linking phrases such as “However, a significant criticism of this view is…” or “In response, a theist might argue that…” to ensure your essay does not read like a list of disconnected points.

3. Deconstructing the Question |

Many students lose marks because they do not fully address the specific demands of the question. WJEC questions often contain command words such as ‘Assess’, ‘Evaluate’ or ‘Discuss’. ‘Assess’ requires you to weigh up strengths and weaknesses and reach a judgement. ‘Evaluate’ demands a similar balance but often with an emphasis on determining the overall success of an argument. ‘Discuss’ invites you to explore a range of perspectives, but you still need to come to some evaluative conclusion.

Also, identify the key philosophical content the question targets. For example, the question “Assess the strengths and weaknesses of Act Utilitarianism” requires you to focus specifically on Act Utilitarianism, not merely list general features of utilitarianism. Underline the key terms and plan your response around them, ensuring you do not drift into irrelevant material.

4. Writing an Effective Introduction |

Your introduction should be brief but purposeful. It must define key terms, show you understand the scope of the question, and signpost the evaluative direction your essay will take. Avoid generic phrases like “This is a very important question that has been debated for centuries.” Instead, dive straight into the philosophical territory.

A strong opening for an essay on the problem of evil might read: “The problem of evil challenges the coherence of the classical theistic concept of God as omnipotent, omnibenevolent and omniscient. The evidential problem, in particular, questions whether the sheer quantity and distribution of suffering can be reconciled with the existence of such a God. This essay will assess the strengths of the free will defence and conclude that, while it offers a partial explanation for moral evil, it fails to adequately address natural evil.”

Each body paragraph should follow the PEEL structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Start with a clear point that directly relates to the question. Then provide evidence: this could be a quotation from a philosopher, a well-known thought experiment, or a precise summary of an argument. Next, explain how this evidence supports your point and, crucially, how it can be evaluated. Finally, link back to the question or forward to the next paragraph.

每个主体段落都应遵循 PEEL 结构:Point(观点)、Evidence(证据)、Explanation(解释)、Link(连接)。

For instance, when discussing Act Utilitarianism: Point: “Act Utilitarianism is praised for its flexibility, allowing moral decisions to be tailored to specific situations.” Evidence: “Bentham’s hedonic calculus provides a framework for measuring pleasure over pain in each unique act.” Explanation: “This avoids the rigidity of rule-based systems, but it creates a burden of calculation and can lead to intuitively abhorrent conclusions if, say, an innocent person’s suffering brings about greater overall happiness.” Link: “Thus, the very feature that makes the theory flexible also exposes it to the criticism that it ignores justice.”

6. Critical Evaluation and Counterarguments |

Evaluation is the heart of AO2. It means not just stating that an argument is “strong” or “weak”, but explaining why. Always consider counterarguments and the responses that could be made to them. A sophisticated essay will evaluate the evaluator: “While the tyranny-of-the-majority objection is powerful, a utilitarian could respond by distinguishing between higher and lower pleasures, as Mill does. However, this response shifts the theory toward Rule Utilitarianism, which brings its own problems…”

Use a balanced approach: present a strength, then a weakness, and then perhaps a response to that weakness. Also, distinguish between successful defences and those that fail. Your essay should read like a philosophical dialogue rather than a one-sided report. This depth shows the examiner you grasp the full complexity of the issues.

7. Crafting a Strong Conclusion |

A conclusion must do more than summarise. It should explicitly answer the question by offering a clear, justified judgement. If the question is “Assess the strengths and weaknesses of Act Utilitarianism,” do not merely repeat that it has strengths and weaknesses. Instead, weigh them and state, for example, “Ultimately, the weaknesses of Act Utilitarianism are more fundamental because the theory cannot accommodate our firm intuitions about justice and rights without collapsing into a rule-based system.”

Keep your conclusion concise. No new material should appear here. The best conclusions leave the examiner with a sense of closure and the impression that you have genuinely thought through the philosophical debate, arriving at a thoughtful, personal, yet academically grounded stance.

8. Model Essay 1: Evaluating Utilitarianism |

Question: Assess the strengths and weaknesses of Act Utilitarianism.

Introduction: Act Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory advanced by Jeremy Bentham, which holds that the morally right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. It is a single-principle, aggregative and impartial theory. This essay will evaluate its flexibility and intuitive appeal as key strengths, but will argue that the theory’s inability to safeguard individual rights and the impracticality of the hedonic calculus constitute fatal weaknesses.

One significant strength of Act Utilitarianism is its flexibility. Unlike deontological theories that apply absolute rules, Act Utilitarianism judges each situation on its own merits. For instance, while lying is generally wrong, a utilitarian could justify lying to save an innocent life because that specific act maximises utility. This aligns well with our moral experience that context often matters when making difficult decisions.

However, this flexibility can be seen as a weakness because it allows morally repugnant acts if they result in a net increase in happiness. The classic “sheriff framing an innocent man” scenario illustrates this: if framing one innocent person prevents a riot and saves many lives, Act Utilitarianism seems to demand the framing. Critics, such as Bernard Williams, argue that this violates the integrity and justice that are central to our moral framework. A just theory should not permit the deliberate sacrifice of an innocent individual merely as a means to a greater end.

A further weakness lies in the practical application of the hedonic calculus. Bentham proposed seven criteria to measure pleasure and pain, including intensity, duration, certainty and extent. In reality, it is impossible to accurately quantify and compare the diverse pleasures and pains of all affected beings before acting. The calculation is not only cumbersome but often epistemically inaccessible; we simply cannot know the full consequences of our actions. This makes the theory an impractical guide for everyday moral decision-making. Despite attempts by Mill to refine the calculus with qualitative distinctions, the foundational measurement problem remains.

Conclusion: In assessing Act Utilitarianism, its flexibility and impartiality are attractive features that capture important moral intuitions. However, the theory’s fundamental flaws outweigh its strengths. Its disregard for individual rights and the unworkable nature of the hedonic calculus undermine its viability as a comprehensive ethical theory. While it offers a useful perspective for public policy where trade-offs are necessary, as a standalone theory of right action, it is deeply problematic.

9. Model Essay 2: The Problem of Evil and Suffering |

Question: ‘The existence of evil and suffering proves that God does not exist.’ Evaluate this claim.

Introduction: The problem of evil presents a powerful challenge to classical theism, which asserts the existence of a God who is omnipotent, omnibenevolent and omniscient. The logical problem argues that the mere existence of evil is logically incompatible with such a God, while the evidential problem contends that the amount and distribution of evil make God’s existence highly unlikely. This essay will argue that while the evidential problem raises serious doubts, the claim that it “proves” God’s non-existence is too strong, especially given the free will defence and soul-making theodicy, though these are not without their own problems.

The strength of the evidential argument lies in its reliance on concrete, observable suffering rather than abstract logical possibility. William Rowe’s example of a fawn trapped in a forest fire, dying a painful, prolonged death with no human observer to derive any moral lesson, powerfully suggests that pointless suffering exists. If an omnipotent God could have prevented this suffering without losing any greater good, and an omnibenevolent God would want to prevent it, then the existence of such seemingly gratuitous suffering counts heavily against the existence of the classical God.

However, the free will defence offers a robust response to the logical problem of moral evil. Alvin Plantinga argues that it is logically possible that God could not create a world containing free moral good without the accompanying possibility of moral evil. Moral evil results from the misuse of human free will, a good so great that it justifies the risk. This defence successfully shows there is no logical contradiction between God’s existence and moral evil. Yet, it does not explain natural evil such as the fawn’s suffering or earthquakes that appear entirely unconnected to free will. Furthermore, it does not address the evidential scale of suffering; why would a supremely loving God permit quite so much misery?

The soul-making theodicy, advanced by John Hick, attempts to explain both moral and natural evil by arguing that suffering is necessary for spiritual and moral development. Earth is a “vale of soul-making” where through overcoming challenges we grow into the likeness of God. This provides a plausible reason for why God would permit a world with some evil. However, critics argue that the amount of evil far exceeds what is required for character-building. The suffering of children who die young and the sheer horror of genocides seem to crush rather than ennoble the soul. Moreover, this theodicy raises serious ethical questions: is it morally acceptable to envisage God as imposing such enormous suffering for the development of others?

Conclusion: The existence of evil does not strictly prove the non-existence of God, because logical consistency can be maintained through defences such as Plantinga’s. Nevertheless, the evidential problem renders the claim to ‘know’ God’s existence a matter of immense philosophical tension. While theodicies offer possible reasons, they fail to adequately account for the scope and horror of suffering. Therefore, although the claim that evil proves God’s non-existence is philosophically too ambitious, evil remains the single strongest argument against the God of classical theism.

10. Common Pitfalls to Avoid |

One of the most frequent errors is an over-reliance on description. Students often write lengthy expositions of what a philosopher said without analysing whether the argument succeeds. Remember that AO2 requires evaluation. Another pitfall is the “shopping list” approach: presenting a series of disconnected points with no linking argument. Your essay must flow as a coherent narrative.

Unsubstantiated assertions are also dangerous. Do not say “This argument is weak” without explaining exactly why it is weak and backing up your claim with a specific counterargument or example. Also, avoid writing an overly general conclusion that merely repeats the introduction. A weak ending can undermine an otherwise strong essay.

11. Time Management in the Exam |

For an AS paper, you might have 45-60 minutes per essay depending on the number of questions. Spend the first 5-7 minutes carefully planning. Sketch a quick outline: note your definitions, 3-4 key argument lines and the evaluation you will embed. This planning prevents you from going off-topic and ensures a balanced structure. Then write steadily, reserving at least 5 minutes at the end for a brief check of spelling, clarity and philosophical accuracy.
