📚 A-Level CAIE History: Essential Terms Memory Guide | A-Level CAIE
In CAIE History (9489), examiners do not simply reward remembered dates and events. They reward the ability to use precise historical language. Terms such as causation, continuity, significance and provenance are analytical tools that allow you to move from describing what happened to explaining why it mattered. If an answer says ‘the treaty made Germany angry’ instead of ‘the treaty was a long-term cause of German resentment and undermined the legitimacy of the Weimar Republic’, it remains descriptive and misses higher-level marks. Terminology is therefore not an extra burden; it is a shortcut to stronger, more evaluative writing.
1. Why Terminology Matters in CAIE History | 为什么术语在 CAIE 历史中重要
Using the right terminology shows the examiner that you think like a historian. It allows you to make analytical connections between events, sources and interpretations. Without terms such as ‘provenance’, ‘utility’ or ‘causation’, your writing becomes a list of facts rather than an argument. High-scoring candidates do not know more facts than everyone else; they use a shared historical vocabulary to build explanations and judgements. Make terminology part of your daily revision, not a last-minute list.
2. Command Words You Must Master |
Command words tell you exactly what kind of thinking the examiner wants. ‘Assess’ means weigh up strengths and weaknesses before reaching a judgement. ‘Evaluate’ means make a judgement based on criteria and evidence. ‘To what extent’ invites a balanced argument but still requires a clear final position. ‘Compare’ asks for similarities and differences, while ‘contrast’ focuses on differences only. ‘Analyse’ means break a topic into parts and explain how those parts connect. ‘Discuss’ requires you to present different viewpoints and then reach a reasoned conclusion. Underline the command word before you plan any essay.
| Command word | What it asks |
|---|---|---|
| Assess | Weigh strengths and weaknesses, then judge |
| Evaluate | Judge using criteria and evidence |
| To what extent | Balanced argument with a clear conclusion |
| Compare | Similarities and differences |
| Analyse | Break into parts and show connections |
3. Source Analysis Terms: Provenance and Context |
Provenance means the origin of a source: who created it, when, where, and for what purpose. Context means the wider historical situation around the source. In Paper 1, you should always ask: does the source reflect one person’s view or a wider mood? Audience and purpose also shape content. A speech may exaggerate because the speaker wants applause; a secret memo may be more candid but still has limitations. Tone – satirical, angry, cautious – is also a clue to purpose. Strong answers use provenance and context to explain why a source says what it says.
4. Reliability, Utility and Corroboration |
Reliability asks whether a source can be trusted as evidence for a particular claim. Utility asks what a source is useful for, which is not the same question. A biased newspaper article may be unreliable for facts about a riot but highly useful for revealing public opinion. Corroboration means checking a source against other evidence. If two independent sources agree, reliability is strengthened; if they conflict, you must explain why. Avoid saying ‘this source is biased so it is useless’. Instead write: ‘The source is limited as evidence of X, but it has high utility for revealing Y.’
