📚 Common Misconceptions in IGCSE Cambridge Philosophy and How to Fix Them | IGCSE

Many IGCSE Philosophy candidates lose marks not because they lack ideas, but because they repeat common mistakes in reasoning and essay structure. This guide identifies ten frequent misconceptions and offers practical corrections.

1. Confusing Validity with Truth |

A deductive argument is valid when the conclusion must be true if the premises are true. Validity is a formal property, not a claim about the real world.

For example, “All cats can fly; Tom is a cat; therefore Tom can fly” is valid in form but unsound because the first premise is false.

Correction: check validity by asking whether the conclusion would have to be true if the premises were true. Only then ask whether the premises are actually true; that second question concerns soundness.

2. Treating Philosophy as Purely Subjective Opinion |

It is tempting to write “this is just my opinion”, but philosophy requires justified claims. A view must be supported by reasons, examples and responses to objections.

Correction: replace “I think X because I feel it” with “I think X because P, Q and R”. Use logical connectives such as therefore, however, and since.

使用 therefore、however、since 等逻辑连接词。

AO1 asks you to show knowledge and understanding of philosophical ideas. AO2 asks you to analyse and evaluate those ideas.

Merely stating a personal opinion usually satisfies neither.

3. Confusing Descriptive and Normative Statements |

A descriptive statement says what is the case, such as “many people lie under pressure”. A normative statement says what ought to be the case, such as “lying is wrong”.

You cannot move from “people do lie” to “people ought to lie” without an additional moral principle. This is sometimes called the is-ought gap.

Correction: when building an ethical argument, state the bridging principle explicitly. For example, “If a practice is common, it is morally acceptable” is a premise that must itself be defended.

4. Misusing Counterexamples |

A counterexample is a specific case that contradicts a universal claim. It is not a personal attack or an irrelevant detail. If someone claims “all swans are white”, one black swan refutes the whole universal statement.

In philosophy, counterexamples are essential for testing definitions. For example, if knowledge is defined as justified true belief, a Gettier case presents a justified true belief that is not knowledge.

Correction: for every universal definition or principle, ask: “Is there a possible case that meets the conditions but is not the thing being defined?”

5. Treating Disagreement as Proof of Relativism |

The existence of moral disagreement across cultures does not prove that there is no objective moral truth. Disagreement shows that people have different beliefs, not that all beliefs are equally true.

For example, people disagree about the shape of the Earth, but that does not mean the Earth has no objective shape.

Correction: distinguish descriptive relativism, the factual observation that people disagree, from normative relativism, the value claim that no moral standard is better than another. Only the first is supported by evidence of disagreement.

6. Misusing Thought Experiments |

A thought experiment is a controlled imaginary scenario designed to test a principle. Many students add extra details or treat their immediate intuition as a proven conclusion. This weakens the test.

In the trolley problem, if you change the number of tracks, add uncertain victims or alter whether the agent is involved, you are no longer testing the same principle unless you say so explicitly.

Correction: state the setup, the variable being tested, the intuition the scenario produces, and whether that intuition supports or challenges the principle.

7. Oversimplifying Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is often reduced to “the greatest happiness for the greatest number”, but this
