IGCSE WJEC Geography candidates often lose marks not because they do not know the content, but because they use key terms imprecisely or hold onto common misunderstandings. This revision guide identifies frequent misconceptions and shows how to correct them with clear, exam-ready language.

1. Weather vs Climate | 天气与气候

Many answers say ‘the climate today is wet and windy’ or describe climate as a forecast. This confuses short-term atmospheric conditions with long-term averages.

Weather is the day-to-day state of the atmosphere, including temperature, precipitation, wind and humidity. Climate is the average weather over a long period, usually 30 years. In an exam, define weather as ‘short-term’ and climate as ‘long-term average’.

Altitude, ocean currents and cloud cover also affect temperature, so temperature does not fall evenly with latitude.

Population density is the number of people per square kilometre, calculated as total population divided by area. Population distribution is the pattern of where people live, such as linear, clustered or dispersed. Urbanisation is the increasing percentage of a country’s population living in urban areas. Urban growth is the absolute increase in the urban population or physical area of cities. A city can grow in population without urbanisation if the rural population grows at the same rate.

6. Causes of Earthquakes and Volcanoes | 地震与火山的成因

Students often say earthquakes and volcanoes happen everywhere on plate boundaries and that ridges only produce volcanoes, not earthquakes.

Most seismic and volcanic activity occurs at plate margins, but not all boundaries are the same. Constructive boundaries, such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, produce volcanic activity and shallow earthquakes through plates moving apart. Destructive boundaries produce deep earthquakes and explosive volcanoes through subduction. Conservative boundaries mainly produce earthquakes. Hotspots such as Hawaii produce volcanoes inside plates, so ‘all volcanoes are on plate boundaries’ is false.

River erosion involves wearing away the bed and banks. Hydraulic action is the force of water; abrasion is the river using its load to scrape; attrition is particles colliding and becoming smaller; solution dissolves soluble rocks. Transportation includes suspension, saltation, traction and solution. Deposition of large material occurs where energy drops, usually in the upper or middle course, not the low-energy lower course where fine silt is deposited.

Many candidates believe a high GDP per person automatically means a high quality of life and that one indicator is enough to judge development.

GDP measures economic output but not income distribution, health, education, safety or environmental quality. A country can have high GDP yet poor life expectancy or high inequality. The Human Development Index (HDI) combines life expectancy, education and income to provide a wider measure. Quality of life also includes non-measurable factors such as political freedom and personal wellbeing.

Renewable means the resource is replenished naturally, such as solar, wind, hydro or biomass. Sustainable means the energy can be used indefinitely without unacceptable damage to environment, society or economy. Large hydropower is renewable but can flood ecosystems, displace people and release methane from submerged vegetation, so it may not be fully sustainable. Judgements require considering local impacts and long-term costs.

可再生意味着资源可自然补充,如太阳能、风能、水能或生物质能。可持续意味着能源能够长期使用,不对环境、社会或经济造成不可接受的损害。大型水电站是可再生的,但可能淹没生态系统、使居民迁移并释放被淹没植被产生的甲烷,因此未必完全可持续。判断需要结合当地影响和长期成本。


10. Climate Change vs Ozone Depletion | 气候变化与臭氧层空洞

A very frequent error is to say the ozone hole causes global warming or that climate change is caused by the hole in the ozone layer.

Global warming is driven by enhanced greenhouse gas emissions, mainly CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O, trapping longwave radiation. Ozone depletion is caused by CFCs destroying stratospheric ozone, allowing more harmful UV radiation to reach the surface. The two are separate problems, although some CFCs are also greenhouse gases. Do not write ‘the ozone hole lets heat from the Sun in to warm the Earth’.
