These formulas are not mathematical laws; they are memory tools. Each one links the assessment language of CAIE Drama to practical theatre making, script analysis, and evaluation.
1. The Core Drama Equation |
All drama can be reduced to a basic equation: a performer does something, in a space, for an audience, with a conflict that demands attention.
DRAMA = ACTION + CONFLICT + SPACE + AUDIENCE
- Action – what is done, not just what is said.
- Conflict – the obstacle or tension that drives the scene. /
- Space – the physical or imaginary world of the play. /
- Audience – the intended target of meaning and impact. /
In exam answers, use this equation to check that every scene you describe has an action, a conflict, a defined space and an intended audience response.
2. Character Construction Formula |
A believable role is built from four layers. If any layer is missing, the character will feel general rather than specific.
CHARACTER = GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCES + OBJECTIVE + OBSTACLE + TACTICS
- Given circumstances – age, class, time, place, relationships, situation. /
- Objective – what the character wants in the scene or play. /
- Obstacle – what stops the character from getting the objective. /
- Tactics – the moment-by-moment strategies used to overcome the obstacle. /
Stanislavski called the smallest unit of action a beat. Each beat should be played with one clear objective and one chosen tactic.
3. Plot Structure Theorem |
Most scripts follow a sequence of dramatic events. Learning this sequence helps you analyse how tension is built, released, or manipulated.
PLOT = EXPOSITION → INCITING INCIDENT → RISING ACTION → CLIMAX → FALLING ACTION → RESOLUTION
| Exposition | Introduces setting, characters and background. / |
| Inciting incident | The event that starts the main conflict. / |
| Rising action | Tension builds through complications. / |
| Climax | The highest point of tension or turning point. / |
| Falling action | Consequences begin to unfold. / |
| Resolution | Conflict is resolved or redefined. / |
Brechtian and non-linear plays may deliberately break this sequence. If a text does so, explain the effect on the audience rather than forcing the model onto it.
4. Script Analysis Law |
Good analysis does not only state what a character says; it uncovers what is meant, wanted, risked, and changed in each moment.
SCRIPT SCORE = TEXT + SUBTEXT + OBJECTIVE + STAKES + BEAT
- Text – the exact words spoken. /
- Subtext – the underlying meaning or emotion not spoken aloud. /
- Objective – the character’s want within the unit. /
- Stakes – what is lost or gained if the objective fails or succeeds. /
- Beat – a change in subject, tactic, tempo or emotional intensity. /
When writing about a scene, quote a line, identify its subtext, link it to the objective, and evaluate how the stakes raise tension.
5. Stage Geography Formula |
Stage directions are always given from the actor’s point of view when facing the audience. Accurate terminology shows strong practical understanding.
STAGE PICTURE = LEVELS + PROXEMICS + FOCUS + BODY ANGLES
| US / upstage | Away from the audience. / |
| DS / downstage | Closest to the audience. / |
| SR / stage right | Actor’s right when facing the audience. / |
| SL / stage left | Actor’s left when facing the audience. / |
| CS / centre stage | The central acting area. / |
| Levels | Standing, sitting, kneeling, lying, raised platforms. / |
| Proxemics | The physical distance between performers and its meaning. / |
| Focus | Where the audience’s attention is directed. / |
| Body angles | Full front, quarter, profile, three-quarter back, full back. |
Strong blocking uses contrast in levels, distances, focus and body angles to show status, intimacy, threat or isolation without extra dialogue.
6. Blocking and Stagecraft Equation |
Blocking is not simply moving actors around. Every movement must be motivated by character, objective, or staging intention.
BLOCKING = ENTRANCE + CROSS + TURN + GESTURE + EXIT
- Entrance – how and why a character enters; it establishes status and energy. /
- Cross – moving from one stage position to another; it shifts focus and relationship. /
- Turn – a change of body direction that can signal decision or emotional shift. /
- Gesture – a physical action that communicates meaning or intention. /
- Exit – how and why a character leaves; it shapes rhythm and expectation. /
In a devised piece, record blocking through stage directions, diagrams, or annotated ground plans so you can evaluate its effectiveness in your supporting evidence.
7. Voice and Movement Theorem |
Performance is created through the precise control of voice and physical expression. Examiners look for range, contrast, and intention, not just loud volume or big gestures.
PERFORMANCE = VOICE + MOVEMENT + FACIAL EXPRESSION + RELATIONSHIP
Vocal variables include pitch, pace, pause, volume, tone, articulation, accent, intonation and breath control. Movement variables include gesture, posture, gait, stillness, eye contact, spatial awareness and physical tension.
- Pitch – high or low frequency of voice. /
- Pace – speed of delivery. /
- Pause – a deliberate silence that creates tension or emphasis. /
- Volume – loudness or softness. /
- Posture – how the body is held, indicating status, age, mood. /
- Gait – manner of walking; it reveals character. /
- Stillness – absence of movement used for focus and contrast. /
Use specific adjectives in evaluation: clipped, slurred, fluid, rigid, sustained, percussive, restrained, expansive.
8. Lighting Design Formula |
Lighting design establishes time, place, mood, focus and rhythm. A lighting state is the combination of several controllable qualities at any moment.
LIGHTING STATE = INTENSITY + COLOUR + ANGLE + QUALITY + FOCUS
- Intensity – brightness or dimness of light. /
- Colour – hue created by gels, LEDs or colour mixing.
- Angle – direction of light, affecting shadows and facial visibility. /
- Quality – hardness or softness, warm or cool. /
- Focus – where the light falls, such as a pool, wash, or special. /
