📚 IGCSE CAIE Philosophy: Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | IGCSE CAIE

IGCSE CAIE Philosophy is a subject that rewards clear thinking, careful reading and disciplined writing. A summer bridging course should not try to cram every theory into your head; instead, it should train you to identify arguments, question assumptions and express your own reasoned position.

IGCSE CAIE

1. What Is Philosophy at IGCSE Level?

At IGCSE level, philosophy is not simply the history of ideas. It is an active discipline: you learn to break down arguments, compare viewpoints and build a case using evidence and reasoning.

The CAIE approach, even when delivered through a school bridging course, emphasises skills over memorisation. You may study topics from epistemology, ethics, metaphysics and political philosophy, but the exam-style questions will always ask you to explain, evaluate or discuss.

  • Explain a key concept accurately. |
  • Reconstruct an argument in your own words. |
  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses. |
  • Justify your own view with reasons. |

2. The CAIE Assessment Mindset | CAIE

IGCSE CAIE philosophy questions usually use command words such as “define”, “explain”, “compare” and “evaluate”. Each command word tells you how much depth is expected.

IGCSE CAIE

Define requires a precise meaning. Explain requires causes, reasons or steps. Compare requires you to identify similarities and differences. Evaluate requires you to weigh strengths and weaknesses and reach a judgement.

From your first week, practise turning a topic into a possible exam question. For example, instead of passively reading about free will, ask: “Explain what determinism is and evaluate one argument for free will.”

3. Core Themes: Epistemology |

Epistemology asks how we know what we know. Key concepts include knowledge, belief, justification, truth and scepticism.

The traditional definition of knowledge is justified true belief: you know P if and only if P is true, you believe P, and you have justification for P.

Knowledge = Justified True Belief (JTB)

However, Edmund Gettier’s counterexamples show that JTB may not be sufficient. A famous case: Smith has strong evidence that Jones owns a Ford, so he believes “the person who will get the job owns a Ford”. It turns out Smith gets the job, and he himself happens to own a Ford, but his original belief was justified yet only true by luck.

This is a good summer discussion: can a lucky guess count as knowledge? You should learn to explain why this matters for defining knowledge.

4. Core Themes: Ethics |

Ethics explores how we ought to live and which actions are right or wrong. At IGCSE level, you often meet three theories: utilitarianism, deontology and virtue ethics.

Utilitarianism says the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Deontology, associated with Kant, says some actions are right or wrong in themselves, regardless of consequences. Virtue ethics, from Aristotle, focuses on character and virtues rather than individual acts.

A summer bridging course should not just label these theories. It should ask you to apply them to scenarios: for example, is it morally acceptable to lie to save a friend’s feelings?

Expect exam-style questions like: “Explain one strength and one weakness of utilitarianism” or “Evaluate the claim that the ends justify the means.”

5. Core Themes: Metaphysics |

Metaphysics asks about reality, existence, identity and time. At IGCSE level, accessible questions include personal identity, free will and the mind-body problem.

Consider the Ship of Theseus: if every plank of a ship is replaced one by one, is it still the same ship? This helps you distinguish between numerical identity and qualitative identity.

For personal identity, John Locke argues that memory links your past self to your present self. You can discuss cases like amnesia or brain transplantation.

Free will is another lively topic. Determinism says every event is caused by prior events; if so, can we be morally responsible for our actions?

6. Core Themes: Political Philosophy |

Political philosophy examines justice, authority, freedom and rights. Key questions include: Why should we obey the state? What makes a society fair?

Thomas Hobbes imagines a state of nature without government: life would be “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short”. He argues we agree to a social contract to escape chaos.

John Locke has a more optimistic view: people have natural rights to life, liberty and property, and government must protect those rights. If it fails, citizens may resist.

For IGCSE-style writing, compare Hobbes and Locke on the role of the state. Use principles from both to evaluate a modern issue such as compulsory voting or school uniform policies.

7. How to Read Philosophical Texts |

Philosophy texts are dense. Do not read them like a novel. First read for the main question, then reread to find the author’s answer and the reasons given for it.

A useful method is SQ3R adapted for philosophy: Survey the headings, Question what the author is asking, Read slowly, Recite the argument in your own words, and Review by comparing with another philosopher.
