📚 IGCSE Cambridge Geography: Interdisciplinary Integrated Question Training | IGCSE

Interdisciplinary questions in IGCSE Cambridge Geography require you to connect core geographical concepts with skills from mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and economics. You may be asked to calculate a rate, interpret a scatter graph, explain a chemical process or evaluate a management strategy using numerical evidence. This article breaks down the most common integrated question types and gives you a clear method for each one.

1. Understanding Interdisciplinary Questions |

An interdisciplinary question usually combines a geographical context with a calculation, a graph, a scientific principle or an economic evaluation. For example, a question on river flooding may ask you to calculate discharge using the formula Q = A × V, then explain how channel shape affects velocity. The key is to identify which subject skill is being tested before you start writing.

Marks are awarded for both method and geographical understanding. You must show your working for calculations, use correct units, and link your final answer back to the geographical context. If you only write a mathematical answer without explaining the geography, you will lose marks.

2. Map Skills and Mathematical Scaling |

Map questions often require you to convert real distances using a ratio scale or a linear scale. For a map with a scale of 1:50,000, 1 cm on the map represents 50,000 cm on the ground, which is 0.5 km. Use the unitary method: Real distance = Map distance × Scale factor, then convert cm to m or km.

Real distance (km) = Map distance (cm) × Scale factor ÷ 100,000

You may also need to calculate area or gradient. Gradient is expressed as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run. For example, if a slope rises 120 m over a horizontal distance of 3 km, the gradient is 120 ÷ 3000 = 1:25. Always simplify the ratio so the first number is 1.

3. Climate Graphs and Statistical Averages |

Climate graphs show monthly temperature and precipitation. You must be able to read values accurately, identify the hottest and coldest months, and calculate annual temperature range. Annual range is the difference between the highest and lowest monthly mean temperatures: Range = Maximum monthly temperature – Minimum monthly temperature.

You may be asked to calculate mean annual precipitation and compare it with evaporation to identify a water deficit. For example, if total annual rainfall is 350 mm and potential evapotranspiration is 900 mm, the annual water deficit is 550 mm, indicating an arid climate.

4. Population Pyramids and Demographic Calculations |

Population pyramids show age and sex structure. You need to interpret the shape: a wide base indicates high birth rate, while a narrow top indicates low life expectancy. You may also calculate the dependency ratio: Dependency ratio = (Population aged 0-14 + Population aged 65+) ÷ Population aged 15-64 × 100.

Another common calculation is natural population change: Natural increase = Birth rate – Death rate, expressed per 1000 people per year. If the birth rate is 28 per 1000 and the death rate is 7 per 1000, natural increase is 21 per 1000, or 2.1% per year. Remember that migration is not included in natural change.

5. Physical Geography: Energy, Radiation and Pressure |

Many physical geography questions use basic physics principles. For example, insolation is the incoming solar radiation received by the Earth. The angle of incidence affects the intensity: when the Sun is overhead, the same amount of energy is spread over a smaller area, so temperature is higher. This explains why equatorial regions are warmer than polar regions.

Air pressure also follows the gas law: warm air expands and rises, creating low pressure; cold air contracts and sinks, creating high pressure. You may be asked to explain how a sea breeze forms using these pressure differences. Use terms such as ‘differential heating’, ‘convection’ and ‘pressure gradient’ to earn full marks.
